kanwar777 Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Yep, so I bought an opteron170(CCBBE - 0617FPMW), did a clean format and reinstall of windows, I also upgraded my PSU to an OCZ GameXtreme 600W and bought an Nvidia 8800GTS. I do currently have ONE stick of the ram in my sig, as I am RMA'ing the other one. Right now I have it at 2.9ghz, stable, running for two days straight, ran prime on it, as well as gaming, 3dmark and many intensive applications. I'm using the same RAM settings as I did with my previous overclock of my 3000+ as my ram hasn't changed, wondering if you guys suggest any modifications to the settings, also wondering if I can push it more. Are these OK? I have tried upping the FSB to 300 but prime fails in a few minutes(on one of the cores). Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks. http://img439.imageshack.us/img439/7750/cpuzzw3.jpg <-cpuz screenshot

kanwar777 Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 How are the coretemps using CoreTemp Beta? That program keeps crashing on me for some reason after a few mins, but running orthos next to it im getting a max of 54C(core0) and 52C(core1) under load. aelfwyne Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Well, those are better than the core temps I'm getting, my second core is going over 60 at 2.8, and managed 96 hours prime stable. I haven't tried 2.9 yet though, but it seems your temperatures at 2.9 are better than mine at 2.8, so temps may not be your limiting factor. Im even trying lowering voltages slightly, i've reduced LDT and CHIPSET volts. My main concern though, is whether or not I can push it any further, and if not, if there are any settings I can alter for slight performance/stability gains. Capt Proton Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 If I have it right, your memory is this OCZ4001024PF. If so, the rated settings are 3-3-3-8. To push the memory a bit higher, I'd start by setting your tCL to 3, not 2.5. You could try setting the tREF to Auto. There's quite a few posts that suggest that is the best way to go for this setting. I'd also set the tRC to 9, and the tRFC a little higher if unstable. You might want to visit the Official OCZ support site and ask for suggestions there. http://www.bleedinedgesupport.com/ocz/forum/index.php I can't find anything that says what type of chips are on this memory, so its hard to say what to set the Drive strengths etc to. I think looking at the OCZ site would be your best bet, although the chances of this memory doing a decent overclock are probably not very good. You say you are RMA ing one stick. The chances of ending up with a matched pair of memory are probably not good. Did you buy them as a matched set? If so, you should have RMAd the pair. I'd send one of the OCZ reps at the web site an EMail and discuss this aspect with him.

It only came in single sticks of 1gb so I bought two, RMA'ing one as it was failing memtest. Should get it back in the next few days. I remember reading somewhere about maxing it at 215mhz or so at 3-4-4-8... I'll check the OCZ forum as well, maybe I can get some additional help there. I know it isn't fantastic ram for OC'ing, i'm just hoping to max out its full potential and maybe hit 3ghz at the same time. Capt Proton Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 OK. Good luck with your over clock. If the memory stick you get back has different ICs on it than the one you've got, even getting them to run stock together may be difficult. Just something to keep in mind. kanwar777 Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Alright I got the second stick of ram back. No it wasn't a dual pack, originally they sold separate sticks of 1gb, but now they're selling them in packs. Everything runs great, I got a newer heatsink on it, but performance, timings and part number are the same. Not getting a lot of help on the OCZ forums either, somebody suggested I try the 150 divider but it isn't available to me unless I change multi to 9, at which point i get stuck in a boot loop anyway. I do have a question though, someone mentioned how im actually running on STOCK volts, since I only have my STARTUP value at 1.475 and everything else to default. Would this be accurate? In which case its pretty ridiculous to be running it at this speeds on stock volts.
mikepellegrini Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 I just built two new Opt 170 systems. These chips are really great! The first system, I've gotten to 2.7 GHz on stock volts; the second I had to raise the vcore to 1.33 to get it to run stable at 2.7 GHz. I'm really, really impressed. I did have the one briefly up to 1.37 vcore and noticed about a 5c temp increase. Which makes me wonder - Looking at the TCase Max for my processor - 57c - I'm wondering how far I can go? Right now the core temps (as measured by CoreTemp Beta 0.94) are averaging 54-57 between the two (after maybe an hour of dual Prime); Speedfan 4.31 reports the core temp as 54c and the CPU temp as 44c. To which sensor does the TCase Max refer to? It's gotta be the heat spreader case temp, I hope? (which SpeedFan reports as the "CPU Temp" - the 44c). If this is the case, I've got lots of headroom. I'm kinda shooting for 3 GHz on both comps - if that's possible. What you guys have already done is extremely heartening. PhoetuS Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Well I'm going to chime in here as well, I was going to start a thread, but this one is here already I just got a new opty 170 tonight from the Egg - a CCBBE 0615DPMW - WOOHOO! Dropped it in took it to 250x10 @ 1.35v for a while, then to 270x10 @ 1.35v, did some more playing with it & right now it is 30min into Priming 300x10 @ 1.45v. What a wonderful chip this is. I had great feeling about it as I installed it, & it sure is a great chip... I really hope I can get it stable here @ 3.0ghz but if not I know that I can get it stable @ 2.9 on low volts... This thing is way better then my other one (the one in my sig)... I'm Loving It
kanwar777 Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Yeah, this really is an excellent chip, I was in shock when I realized I am at 2.9 on stock. Now i'm worrying about the temps though, im getting 50-52C max under high load consistantly, is that OK or is it hurting the life of my chip? Also turning up the voltage to 1.475(cpu vid, not startup) and trying 300x10 isn't working for me either, I end up failing prime within a minute. Does this mean i've hit a wall and the chip itself is incapable of going to 3ghz stable? Or is it just not going any further because of my high temps?
