Is my motherboard dOA?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm a newbie on his second build

I've narrowed it down to either my CPU or Mobo being DOA, I'm getting a blank, black screen. No beeps from my mobo, but the Red LED light is on.

If I plug in an old sata drive there's activity (opposed to no activity from a new, blank one) but still I get nothing on screen.

Can anyone help?

Did you check to make sure the CPU is seated properly? Also, try getting another processor, such as a Pentium D and check to see if that works. Make sure the processor fan is installed correctly and all connections are snug.

No post or anything correct? If that's the case then...

You might want to contact OCZ in regards to your memory. It might work on other machines, however, that isn't the case here I'm afraid. The Infinity bios mem speed table is pretty tight with earlier bios revisions, and it doesn't quite match up with what OCZ programmed on it's sticks for looser timings. If you contact them, they will reprogram them for you.

Did you follow the build tutorial to the letter?

If your CPU fan is running and you see leds lit on your MOBO then your CPU is probably ok as BIOS default Vcore is auto.

It is time to look at your memory sticks first.

Start by using one stick of memory. Put the stick in the farthest orange slot from the CPU. Power your rig and go into BIOS GENIE and enable Memtest. For the specific memtest configuration do a search on the forum for Memtest.Run Memtest on each stick. Let us know how it goes. :)

This IS NOT a LANPARTY board.... There are NO DEBUG LED's...

THERE ARE NO ORANGE SLOTS OR YELLOW. Obviously you don't have the board...

Hehe I was gonna comment on the orange slots thing as both my Inf 975X have blue and black :D but I was gonna be a little more polite about it...

There is one diagnostic LED on the board - behind the furthest PCI slot from the CPU - however it will light up even on a dead board ( :( looks at one of the dead boards) and regardless of whether the RAM or CPU are working or not...

So you have tried both single sticks of RAM in the nearest CPU slot right?

And just as a troubleshooting 101 step you have unplugged every item NOT required to get a BIOS post right....Hard Drives, Floppy, add on cards....

Only things connected to the MB should be power connectors and obviously the video card.

I don't think a bios update will fix the non-posting problem with the memory. I would contact OCZ and see what they say. I originally had problems with my OCZ sticks not posting in my board as well. They came out with some new speed timing tables for them, and reprogrammed mine, and everything works now great. I think you should give it a shot. (And besides, that's some good memory you got there...i wouldn't give it up)

The red LED is just to show that power has been applied to the board.
