kimohw Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 every time I try to remove the heatsink, the cpu came out with the hsf stucking into it. I tried to run prime 95 for like 1 hour before I remove the hsf, but the cpu still stuck and came out with the hsf, also I tried to right and left the hsf before removing it. I now want to change the mobo and I'm worry about bending the pins. reference photo I found on a review:
MACarter02 Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 You should use a little less thermal paste in the future, and gently lifting while twisting the hsf works best. Also, if you can, hold down the processor while twisting and lifting the hsf.
thejamesvolta Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I second MACarter. I might try a hair dryer from a safedistance to heat up paste, then slowly start twisting it off. Way to much paste by the way. Also, did you use thermal adhesive or paste?
kimohw Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I'm using the stock HSF and stock thermal PAD pre-installed should I have problem removing it ?
WintersFury Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I'm using the stock HSF and stock thermal PAD pre-installed should I have problem removing it ? Yeah, the thermal pad is a wax type substance and melts into the processor after you use it. However now that you pulled it off, you really should clean off the thermal pad and put some paste on, as the pad may have been trashed in the process. kimohw Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I didn't yet removed it. I'm thinking on changing my motherboard but I'm really worry about bending the pins and really afraid to remove it, I don't want to lose the processor :/

kimohw Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 Athlon64 heatsinks came with pre-applied thermal paste, not thermal pad. :tooth: should I be able to remove the stock HSF and keep the CPU in the socket if I follow this video or I can say that 100% 4 sure the CPU will stuck into the HSF ? http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_ty...ove-HighRes.wmv
WintersFury Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 Athlon64 heatsinks came with pre-applied thermal paste, not thermal pad. :tooth:  All the ones I've ever seen have had a thermal pad on em. And kimohw did say it had a thermal pad on it. kimohw, as long as you don't tweak the heatsink while pulling it you should be fine. Try runing the system for about 15 mins before you remove the heatsink as it should loosen up whatever is holding it on. The video doesn't work for me so I can't say anything about it, but since it is amd telling you how to get it off, it should work fine. Booster Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 Just like MACarter said and in the video you linked twist it gently back and forth and try to tilt it off. One thing good about the A64's is you won't be able to damage the core like this.
taowulf Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 For the pad/paste question, I just checked the heatsink/fan that came with my 64 x2 and it is paste. It is also a different color than what is in the OP's pic, so there may not be a stock answer. Either way, look like it leaked all over the place. boywander Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 He said it was a lifted photo for illustrative purposes. If it's an adhesive pad, those things stick quite solidly. Just be careful.
