4GB Memory and VMware

Recommended Posts

Good Evening All,

Ok here is my situtaiton lets see if i describe it. I have just aquired 2 additional gig of memory for my machine, its exactly the same memory thats currently installed. I run windows XPMC 32bit. I know the issues with 4GB of memory and xp 32 bit..not a problem.. I use VMware alot!! usually runing virtual servers and clients (for MCSE practice/testing) and I always run out of memory. even with the machines set at thier minumum.

Ok so here is my question. would it be possible to install the 4 GB of memory and leave my current setup using the 2GB. but also install a dual boot of either 64bit linux or XP 64bit so that i will be able to use all 4GB. with out causeing too many issues? really all that will be installed on the 64bit versions is VMware.

Thanks Chris

Do you mean install 4GB of mem in the host machine and allocate the whole 4GB to virtual pc's, if that is what you mean then no i think that would cause probs.

If you have 4 gb installed in the host then is it not more sense to allocate say 2Gb maybe 3gb to the virtual pc's?????

No i would not allocate the whole 4GB to Virtual PC's but XP64 bit would manage that better then XPMC. So i guess im asking could i allocate memory different on a dual boot machine with 32bit os and a 64bit os?

XP 64 installed onto a different disk partition should be able to address all 4Gb of memory. While running XP64 you could launch VMWare and allocate more memory to each Virtual PC you are running.

Under XP32 the system would only see ~3Gb of memory and the rest would be unaddressable because of the OS not the hardware.

Running a development/test setup on another partition with dual boot is a good idea anyway just in case you screw things up by accident.

Well right now my XPMC only sees 2.25 or something like that.. Its no big deal to me. when i boot at defaults the pc runs fine.. but when i boot from my overclock settings it will freeze after about 5 min... do i need to go through the whole overclocking deal now that i have 4 GB of memory?

For sure. 4 sticks of ram is much more difficult on the memory controller, and you might not even hit the 'stock' speeds of the ram.

Remember that they're rated only as a pair, when two pair are used that rating no longer holds true.

Either that or you can just set a bigger divider and run some tests to see if its stable, thats what I would do.

Ahh ok thats a good idea. Do you think i will need to pump any more juice to them?

If they're rated for it. Some boards also tend to undervolt when 4 sticks are used, I have no clue though on these boards.

It' probably wouldn't hurt to bump it up to 2.8v if you're having some problems getting them stable. Of course keep some air going across them too.
