Raid 0

Hello everyone,

 

I have read some post about the raid options but I am sure you will be able to help me on this …

 

To build a RAID 0 with 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA – 160, I set up the Bios and build the array by choosing to create a striped array and bootable Raid option, and then I installed the Raid Drivers and a fresh copy of Windows XP SP2.

 

Then from Windows I set up the NVIDIA Raid Software (NVIDIA Nforce) but when it’s done I can’t find the NVIDIA Raid Management utility!

 

So here are my questions:

 

Where Can I find this stupid NVIDIA Raid Management utility? What about your own experience ?

 

If the NVIDIA Raid Management utility doesn’t works with NVIDIA IDE Drivers, can I choose to do not install them? Or do I really need to install the NVIDIA IDE Drivers or can I keep the default windows drivers?

 

How can check to see if the raid 0 is really working has it should be?

RAID utility is what you see during the POST after detecting array, press F10 to enter RAID utility. If you don't see this, maybe you don't have RAID enabled in BIOS? You also have to enable the ports the RAID array is on.

You need the IDE drivers if you are using RAID.

How can check to see if the raid 0 is really working has it should be?

If you can boot into Windows and you see 1 drive instead of 2 at 300GB+ RAID 0 is working.

That is the point.... When I set up a proliant (HP) server for my compagny with RAID 0 my 2 disk become one (2 x 70Go on raid 0 = 70Go), so why when I choose Striped array on my NF4 ultra D I can see one disk but with an extend size (2 X 160 on Raid 0 = 320Go) !! I am sure there is something wrong but I have download the DFI manuel about raid configuration and there is nothing about this kind of problem.

 

The only way to see my 2 seagate HDD becoming one with the size of one disk is when I set up the bios array to make a mirroring raid, but I am looking for RAID 1 :mad:

Raid 1 is mirroring and that seems to be what your proliant server is set up for. If one disk fails, the other takes over and all is well.

Raid 1 is more or less for folks who want security. You only get the storage capacity of one disk while the other is an exact duplicate "just in case".

 

You are asking about Raid 0 which is a stripe that takes both hard drives and combines them ( minus a few GBs) for performance and speed.

If one drive fails here the whole array is shot.

 

Raid 1 with your two seagate drives would show as 160 GB storage or such.

Raid 0 with your two seagate drives would show as 309 Gb storage or such.

You only need the software for RAID 1 (mirrored drives).

When you build a RAID 0 Array once inside windows you will just see one hard drive ( c drive). In essence, that is indeed what you just built.

It appears to look like just one single drive. it is not going to list as RAID 0 or anything like that.

You also do not need any programs to "use it".

If windows sees it and it lists as a healthy drive under disk managment, you are all set.
