Using Ata To Sata Adaptor

Here's the deal. I have the Abit Nf7-2 which has SATA on it. It came with the adaptor you plug into the back of your ATA drive. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it to work. I plug it all in and nothing. It came with drivers on a floppy, but when I start up XP it doesnt find any new hardware. How on earth do I get this to work? THere are only two things left that I can think of. Downloading SP1 or trying to install 3rd party RAID device during a fresh windows install. As always any help is appreciated. Thanks

You mentioned installing a 3rd party RAID device, but it seems as if you're only using 1 HD. If that's correct, it has no bearing on the situation. (RAID setups require at least 2 HD's)

There's only 2 possible problems that I can think of. With your motherboard, there's a section in your BIOS for enabling/disabling SATA, this is set to enabled by default though, so I doubt this is the problem (check to make sure though). The other problem could be your HD. SATA will only run UltraDMA/ATA-100 or better HD's, so if you have an old HD it won't work.

Beyond that, I have no clue. I guess make sure you have it plugged into SATA1 connector (closest to the front of your computer).

Is there really any benefit to running a normal ATA HD through a SATA connector? I thought SATA HD's were a bit faster (150) than the normal ATA (133) HD's, but this is one area I really havn't done any research in. Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge on it could shed some light.

this happened with my a7n8x deluxe, theres a jumper for it on the mine, also there wasnt an option in the bios to turn on the sata, however there was an option for scsi, which by the time i figured it out i had rma ed the stuff for a raid controller. :(

Let us know what happens.

The reason i mentioned RAID is because it's actually a SATA RAID controller

And the reason I mentioned SP1 is because Abit says something about needing SP1 for the USB to be 2.0 Not sure what they are talking about, all I know is that my USB ports are all working. I guess they mean it needs SP1 to be 2.0 compliant.

I think there was a patch for USB2 compatability in XP, it could have been for the A7N8x though. When I got my mobo the USB drivers made me install this patch first, stating that it wouldn't work if I didn't.

I dont think you would need ServicePack1 to be be USB2.0 compliant;USB ports can be 2.0 compatible w/o the use of a service pack. Some motherboard disks come with drivers for USB ports (like the A7N8X)

You need SP1 to run USB2.0. Otherwise Windows will just recognize it at 1.1.

BTW, you're using SATA with an ATA harddrive? I didn't know that was possible, but what would be the point? It couldn't run any faster than it's built to.
