Wireless Lan

This sounds like a dumb question, but are different brands of wireless hardware compatible with eachother?

I have a Cisco wireless card which I got from the University dirt cheap to use on their network, and they said ONLY the Cisco cards would work.

Anywhoo, I'd like to use it at home as well, but do I need a Cisco WAP to make it work, or can I get a D-Link or Linksys or something a little cheaper?

Cisco needs Cisco to run, I think. They are prolly locked to a certain channel if they are from a school. You can change it, but not easily. A Cisco WAP would have to have the same settings, can be done but again, not easily.

Good luck.

So I'm probably best to just get another wireless card to use at home? I see I can get one (after rebates) for about 30 bucks (CDN).

<EDIT>

I e-mailed the IT dept. at the university, and they told me that any 802.11b router will work with the card.

</EDIT>
