Here's the original setup-

 

DFI NF4 Ultra D Bios 3/10/05

A64 Winchester 3000+

Corsair PC3200LL XMS Pro 2-2-2-5 (boots as 2-3-2-5 for some reason)

XP-90 heatsink

WD 74gig Raptor on SATA channel 2

NEC 3550 DVD burner on IDE 1

BFG 6800 GT with NV5 Silencer

NeoPower 480 watt

No Case -board mounted to Plexiglass on 1" standoffs - It sits on my workbench

All 4 power connectors plugged into board

 

Here's the problem.

 

Before I installed a new AMD X2 4800+ processor I downloaded the latest official BIOS from the DFI website BIOS 4/06/06. I flashed the Bios and booted up on the 3000+ and everything is normal. Played a few mins of Doom 3 and everything is fine.

I then installed the new 4800+ processor and cleared the CMOS. I started the system and entered the Bios to check temp and it was 38deg C. I then set to Optimum and saved and rebooted the system. After reboot, it sees the 4800 just fine and acts as if it will boot normal but stops right after the PCI config table and I never see Verifying DMI. It simply reboots every time it gets to this point. It pauses for about 5 seconds after the PCI table then it reboots.

 

Things I have done to solve the problem.

Reset the cmos

Reseated the memory

Removed the Audigy2 sound card

Relaxed the memory timing to 3-3-3-8

Reseated all power connections

Reseated the CPU

Unplugged the SATA connector to the hard drive - never gets to boot failure.

Set all memory timings to auto in the Bios

Raised vcore to 1.4 then 1.5

Memory @ 2.80V then 2.85V

 

The CPU will boot up into windows and run just fine if I lower the CPU multi to 11 and raised the memory setting to 250 for 2750 Mhz. It will not however run at the 12 x 200 setting for 2400. Just reboots or Blue screens and reboots while loading Windows.

 

I ran memtest last night for 7 plus hours and had 18 passes with no failures while at 10 x 200 settings. I then raised the multi to 12 with the memory at 200 for the normal 2400Mhz and ran memtest again and in 15 min I had over 1700 errors. I did not right down the exact number of failures but this is close to the number. Is this a bad memory controller on the CPU? I never had ANY issues with this setup for over a year with the 3000+ oced to 2400 and running memtest or whatever. Never 1 failure. Looks like a crappy CPU to me, what do you think?

 

BTW, the only problems I've really had with the board over the past year is that from time to time it will not reconize my USB mouse and I had to unplug and replug it back in and it will then run fine.

You will find the problem in the secondary memory timings. Putting in a new processor is the same as a new build. Time to start over from the beginning.

I have relaxed the memory as much as 4,4,4,12 @ 12 x 200 and still no boot with 2.85v on the memory. So you still think it's a memory problem? Should I RMA the CPU, memory or both? I have another week before I can get my money back from the vendor and I going to the vendor to have the CPU checked out today.

Secondary timings. The ones you listed are primary.

I understand what your telling me and I'll lower the setting if I take it back home with me. I'm going to the vendor and having them test it out and if it fails to boot properly I'll get a refund. If it boots at the vendor then I will take it back home and try lowering the other settings.

 

Here's my issues with the CPU. I beleave it should post at least with the default setting of 12x200 with no overclocking what so ever. I can't help but feel there is an issue with the CPU itself becuase it will OC to 2750mhz (10x250) with the currrent memory setting relaxed. It runs fine at 2-3-2-5 at 11x250 and not having adjusted the secondary settings. It just dosen't seem to like the factory 12 multi for some reason. probably the secondary setting like you suggested, but if it was a good CPU it shoulded matter a default.

 

Tell me, Am I living in a dream world wanting to get what I paid for?

I've seen this before, pop back in your old CPU and download/install the AMD dual core drivers then shut down the machine. Clear CMOS for however long with the power cord out of the PSU and the switch off, pop the 4800 back in and boot her up.

Note:

I would also flash to a more recent BIOS before you do anything.

The only reason why I know this is because the same exact thing happened to me and this is what I did minus the BIOS flash as I just did that earlier.

Sorry I didn't mention this earlier but the dual core driver patch has been installed. I also have already instaled the latest DFI BIOS for this board. Time to run to the vendor. I will report thier findings later. I'm probably going to rrplace with a 4600+ from Fry if it passes, if it don't pass then I'll get another 4800+.

CPU tested good. Hmmm guess I try so differant memory out and see if this does the trick.

Then I will play around with the secondary timing.

Ok, I went to the CPU vendor where I purchased the CPU and they tested the CPU and it checked out just fine. I changed my Corsair 3200XLPRO to just some Corsair value select memory and the system appears to boot normal. I'm going to run memtest again with the cheap memory just for verifiction this is the problem. Now as I noted in the 1st post this memory started posting at 2-3-2-5 on it's on. If I forced it to run 2-2-2-5 I would have random Doom 3 crashes. I emailed Corsiar and they told me to raise the voltage in the BIOS to 2.80 which I did but it did not help. This memory came guaranteed 2-2-2-5 and will not run at the rated settings. Now it will not run with my new processor. Looks like it's time to RMA the ram. I will report back if memtest passes or fails

Definately the memory, 3 passes on memtest and no errors. I had over 1700 errors in 15 minutes with the Corsair XMS pro. Time to visit Ram Guy.

Excuse me if i'm wrong , but , hasn't there been about 382 threads that address issues using Corsair w/ DFI boards ? Might that have been a hint of forseeable problem ?
