overclocking will shorten the life span of your system yes... and if you do it wrong, it can kill a component in a split second ( thats if you push it wayyyyy to far without proper percausions ) butt on average a moderatly overclocked system can last a few years... a good guide to read tho is the one found on the main page of this website, it answears alot of questions you may have, i read it before i did my first overclock and it relieved alot of worry i had about killing my system ( also, you might want to try using the search option in the forum to maybe look for tips n tricks that might have been missed in the guide :) )

if you dont increase your vcore you probably will not see a significant decrease in the life span of your chip, thats what shortens it, but even with a small increase your chip should last you a year easy, staying below 2v will keep your chip alive for a good while, at least thats been the case with my barton. If you really wanna overclock that chip you might want to spend some money investing in some new ram, some newer ram will really allow you to get a higher OC, as far as oc'ing, remember to check for stability and increase in small increments if your worried about frying your chip. Keep an eye on your temps and you will be alright

<-----personally i dont think that fag explains how it just tells you what everything means

on the other hand i would never take vcore higher than 1.85v on a p4(they use much less voltage stock)*sticks a 9v to his cpu with ln2 cooling and a 2ghz overclock( :withstupid:

i dont think i could OC then because my 2400+ gets to about 47C on load on hot days .... i used to run my old 1700+ at 1.8ghz with my volcano7+ and its temp would be about 45C ... my 2400+ i can only get it from 2ghz to 2,14 then my system wont even post.

those temps are pretty high for default settings

might be worth your money then to invest in a little better heatsink and fan then, also if you are using the thermal grease that comes with the processor switching to something like AS3 or AS5 will drop your temps by a decent amount
