Pizoi Posted November 1, 2003 Posted November 1, 2003 Today I decided i'd try out Call of Duty, looked like it had some potential. A couple missions in, the game started locking up at certain points, no error messages or anything. I did a bit of research on the CoD fan site forums to see if anyone else was having the same problem. Turns out a bunch of video cards are having issues with the game, my 9600pro being one of them. Someone posted saying that by turning off Fast Write, the problem went away for him. I havn't tested this yet, but on to my question... What IS Fast Write? Is is supposed to boost performance? I ran 3dMark01 before and after turning OFF fast write, and got 200 points higher with it off. One would assume by the name it would offer better performance, so i'm left a bit confused. Psywar Posted November 1, 2003 Posted November 1, 2003 Very good question.. Fast Write lets a program access the video card directly, instead of though the systems memory. It will reduce the bandwith demands on the systems bus. I dont see why this would affect game play. But maybe the card cant handle whats being drawn from it.. sykocus Posted November 1, 2003 Posted November 1, 2003 fast writes and sideband addressing are ways to improve performace at the possible cost of stability... looks like you won't be able to make use of it with that game. Pizoi Posted November 1, 2003 Posted November 1, 2003 Apparantly 9800, 9700, 9500, 9200 etc all work flawlessly with the game, whereas the 9600, 9000, 7000 and some NVidia cards have major issues. I can't see it as a problem with the card not being able to handle it. More likely IMO that its the games graphic engine, probably the victim of a pressured early release. Since turning fast write off though, the game is working fine. As for the higher 3dMark01 score with it off, I can't make any sense of that with what's been said. Possibly some big coincidence, when I did the first test with it on, i'd been gaming for a few hours; when I did it with it off I had just rebooted. I'll try 3dMark03 and Aquamark3 tomorrow and see if I get the same kind of results.
Guest FxXP Posted November 1, 2003 Posted November 1, 2003 Fast writes is just as bad as having Video BIOS Shadowing turned on. It just creates a buffer and chokes the card when the buffer is reached. Leaving it off and forgetting about it is the way to go. I'd update your chipset drivers if I was you, sounds like you might not be running optimal. Rob

Guest FxXP Posted November 1, 2003 Posted November 1, 2003 I guess it depends on the card that you have. It has been known that Radeon's can choke on some these BIOS features.
