MalibuSS Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 To properly utilize a multi cpu or Dual Core system, Windows uses a different hardware abstraction layer (HAL). This can be checked in your Device Manager under "Computers". If you have one cpu it will say ACPI uniprocessor, it will say ACPI Multiprocessor for the Dual core/dual cpu server boards. This is a major part of windows. If you don't re-install, check to make sure that it is correct. (I don't know if it switches by itself in XP, Iv'e always backed up and gone clean.) The device manager will let you change HALS, but I can't recommend it do to a nightmare I had at work when I added a second P3 to a file server running 2000 PRO Server a couple years back... I've only tried it that one time. It could be completely safe to do on newer systems. Wevsspot: What's your eXPerience? Does it automatically update the HAL, or do you update it Manually? davidk21770's idea of running a repair install probably also change's it to the correct HAL. -Joe
wevsspot Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Malibu, I posted my complete dual core upgrade procedure (sans a Windows reinstall) over in a thread titled Overclocking X2 4800. Using that procedure Windows automatically updated my HAL to ACPI Multiprocessor PC. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/wevs...tiprocessor.jpg
