SlotKiller Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 I have a serious problem with my new opteron 165 and my nf4 ultra-D mobo  My set up is: Antec TruePower 380 DFI nf4 Ultra-D Opteron 165 GSkill 2x1gb HZ PC4000 Gigabyte 6600GT I used to have a 3000+ Venice. When I changed to a brand new 165 I faced a dual channel issue. The system was unable to start at dual channel (3-leds). Even if with 2 stick in single channel the system was ok, but in dual channel... no go. I have tried almost everything: New PSU (Tagan 580): No go New Mem (OCZ 2x1gb UCCC again): No go New cpu (3200+) and mem (twinmos): OK! (this test was underdone by a friend of mine) I have the latest 406 bios, but I have tested also the older 623 with no success. I am going to test the cpu to another dfi ultra-d and see.... Does anyone suspect something from this story? Hope the cpu is clean coz it is a dream step! 2880Mhz on default!
tasr Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Start by enabling memtest in the BIOS and test #5 and #8 for 10-20 passes each. The all test for 20 passes. This is to rule out your memory been an issue. Best do yourself and your motherboard a big favor. Get a PSU from the DFI Recommended Power Supplies list. If it is not here forget it. Cuttlefish1212 Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 This may be a dumb question...but are the memory sticks a dual-channel kit? If not, then that explains the problem. Otherwise, it may be the memory controller on the CPU doesn't like the RAM in DC...would be strange if that was the case though. Have you tried loading optimized defaults for the mobo? Make sure everything is hooked up correctly, jumpers in the proper position, etc. Into which slots are you putting the memory? tasr Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Cuttlefish1212, Great question and a good answer. SlotKiller, Put 1 memory module in the orange slot closet to the edge or if using 2 memory modules insure there are in the orange slots. Or follow this Step by Step New Build guide. Put together a complete signature per the rules. Look at the examples.
SlotKiller Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Guyz I would like to thank you for your answers. As I told before, my system is not a new build. This system works perfectly since March 2005. All the problems started when I change the 3000+ to Opt 165! Sooo... there is no need for memtest since the memory is in default and it is stable in windows (snm-prime). The problem is when I insert the second dimm in the second orange slot (I always use ornge slots). Secondly, This is a dual channel kit ofcourse (Gskill HZ) and i tried the optimized defaults of the 406 bios, and also some timings that the UCCC likes... no go again. My problem is crazy... I know! SlotKiller Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 I appologise for my signature It is available now!
Praz Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 A new processor means a new memory controller. Try to find settings similar to your system in this thread. G.Skill HZ/Any other UCCC (2x1024) 260+ please post here Then test the memory as suggested by tsar.
SlotKiller Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I changed the cpu to an opteron 146 and everything is fine. I also tried the 165 to an abit and there was everything fine again. May I send my ultra-d for RMA? Also, I have bought a new tagan easycon xl 700W and IT CAN'T START with the mobo. With the abit it is OK! Praz Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 May I send my ultra-d for RMA? You can if that's what you want to do. But you will probably get it back with a note saying there is nothing wrong. Your memory timings are not set correctly for the processor. Unlike the Abit, these boards are not plug and play. That's part of what makes them such good overclockers. Putting a different processor in the board is the same as a new build and you need to approach it as such.
SlotKiller Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Sorry but u didnt catch my point. It is not my aim the rma I have nothing to win... instead i have to find a second mobo for the rma time (2-3 weeks) I have 3 weeks that i tryied EVERYTHING. belive me... everything It is not the timings +remember that i am using the mobo for 1+half years. I know what it is I forgot to mention that i have tried TCCD (2x512) and BH5 (2x256) also........ Nothing Do you belive that these 3 kits cannot boot with the default settings (c_cmos) of the latest official bios? come on.... custom_coms Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 You are saying you can't POST with any ram in dual channel and this cpu? Or you aren't windows stable? I've had problems with dual channel not posting. I doubt its the processor. Tyese boards are picky when getting dual channel up and running.Try both sticks in the yellow slots and then the orange slots jsut for kicks. And make sure your gpu is seated correctly. Somehow that was the kicker for me...
SlotKiller Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 when you have 3leds, you cant probably post. Probably the board cannot hold the dual core or something. (it is the firts revision) GPU is ok, and belive me, i have tried every possible combination.
