Unfortunately, I had nothing but troubles with Alibre. Not because the software, but with an avalanche of spam from them (and their supposed "partners"?) that started to invade my mailbox. It took about two months to stop that spam attack. It took half of my sanity, too... :rolleyes:

 

Ok, I just popped in to say thanks for this thread! It will become handy soon at my next software update round. :)

I'd have to agree they're great because they're free, but I hope you sign up under a junk account.

Games:

 

I forgot one of the greatest GUI for chess-engines Arena. Arena works with different protocols like UCI (I think this is the smoothest and best) and Winboard among others. You can find a whole lot of free UCI engines on the net: usually the developers make one of their previous engines available, since they actually compete with the latest against other developers. The engines are rated and behave tactically differently, so there's a whole lot to learn about chess.

Extra information: even though Arena is for Windows it works great through Wine without any need for tweaks.
