yzrider088 Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I have a Western Digital Caviar SE16, 16MB cache, SATA II 3.0Gbps, and it says it should run at 300MB/sec. However, I have it hooked up to the 3.0Gbps SATA controller on my board, and in HD Tach, its only 167MB/sec. Any ideas why its only running about half of what it should? Thanks
lowboy Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Do some research the sata bus has 3gb tranfer but no hdd will do that. What you see is normal.
Sorrento Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 IMO 167 mb/s is a way good result. Do all SATA 300 HDD's require to be configured to SATA2 specs. with a DOS utilty???
Cuttlefish1212 Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Advertised transfer rates for SATA (and also ATA) are theoretical rates and rarely bear out in real-world application. Is the 167 MB/s sustained or burst speeds? If it's sustained then that's quite good...if it's burst then that's par for the course.
