TreverBlack Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 I recently got a hold of a P4 2.0A CPU (an OEM CPU out of a server line produced around 13 or 14 months ago) and purchased an ASUS P4533-X with the SIS 645DX chipset to run it on. To my surprise, I am able to run the P4 @ 2.6Ghz using the ASUS default 2.6Ghz settings. I have run Sandra and 3DMark2003 as well as played Max Payne 2 with absolutely no problems. The CPU temps are 33C at idle and 39C at full load. After researching the OC potential of this CPU, which seems to top out at 2.5Ghz with normal cooling. I find myself wondering why I can achieve 2.6Ghz with the default 1.5v core and 133 FSB settings. I have even stuffed this CPU in a small case with an uproven P/S along with a two drive SCSI 10,000RPM RAID 0 config to boot. Look at the specs below: Intel P4 2.0GHz @ 2.667GHz (Vantec VP4-C7040 HSF - 39C @ full load)) ASUS P4533-X with the SIS 645DX chipset Samsung 512MB 2100 DDR (2.5,2,2,6) (2) IBM Ultrastar 37GB 10,000RPM 4MB cache (RAID 0) Adaptec 2100s RAID controller w/ 32MB Seagate ATA133 80GB w/ 2MB cache Kenwood 72x TRUEx CDROM Verto NVidia Ti4400 GeForce 4 Super-Flower 501S case w/ 350W Directron P/S (a joke, but it's working) I have be somewhat successful @ 2.7Ghz, but during 3DMark2003 I get a blue screen full of digits. I have to account this failure to the 2100DDR I am running. As the CPU still remains at the same temps @ 2.7Ghz as it did @ 2.6Ghz. The 2100DDR can't seem to handle going faster than it's rated spec of 266Mhz. I am going to try 2700DDR @ 300Mhz and a FSB of 150Mhz to see if I can get his CPU to 3.0Ghz. I am wondering if any of you have had similar experiences with a P4 2.0A? Is it possible that this CPU was just extremely underclocked to meet OEM demands that it could reach 3.0Ghz without using extreme cooling? Will Smith Posted October 29, 2003 Posted October 29, 2003 unless u get vapor cooling almost all of the "A" intels will max out at about 2.7ghz. I have had multiple "A" cpu's and that is what i find. if you getting 2.6 I would not worry about getting extreme cooling on that cpu. not really worth it in my mind. TreverBlack Posted October 30, 2003 Posted October 30, 2003 Thanks for the input Will Smith! I still think I should try 2700DDR to see if that is what is limiting my rig from getting to a higher clock speed. This ASUS boards current bios doesn't allow me to change a whole lot. So, I will try the new memory and if it can't go any higher I will just settle with my current 667Mhz OC and call it a day. That is until I build another system with a MB that has more options for OC'ing. For now though, I am pleasently surprised that this CPU can run at 2.6Ghz like it was meant for it. I guess the saying " Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" applies here. I have already achieved an excellant OC with what I have. Thanks again for the info. Mist Posted October 30, 2003 Posted October 30, 2003 why not 3200?
TreverBlack Posted October 31, 2003 Posted October 31, 2003 My ASUS P4533-X technically doesn't support anything higher than 2700 DDR, but I haven't checked out the latest BIOS updates to see if 3200 DDR is supported. Besides, I really don't think I will be able to get higher than 150Mhz FSB/ 300Mhz ram speed anyway. So 2700 DDR (333Mhz) ram will be enough for this rig.
