panheimer Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 hello to everione! i'm new here and a fresh possessor of a x2 3800. i have a question that will be a bit ridicolous: why many of you got an opteron and not a normal athlon 64 or x2? it really worths the price difference? overclocks better? oc newbie Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Both of the opteron's i have run faster than the fx series chips and my old 3200 took alot more volt's and maxed out at 2475. OPTY all the way for me at least.
Mindflux Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 From what I understand, the opteron's are underclocked at stock (since they're suppost to be extra-stressed running a server constantly) so you can OC them very easily and nicely for a PC. Also they have larger caches than most chips which help them run better. Check out the opterons in the OC Database. I'm running my Opty 165 @ 2250mhz without raising the voltage or anything - I could probably get another 200mhz or so out of it without a voltage increase if I really wanted to I just haven't tried yet. So basically, my opty 1.8ghz is effectively a 2.5 or 2.6ghz if I want to actually put a little effort into OCing - with hardcore rigs you can hit 2.8-3ghz. The downside is that you're not garaunteed anything, you could theoretically get an Opty 165 that just won't work much higher than stock (though it's unlikely especially if you make sure you get a good stepping)
hawkeyefan Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 hello to everione! i'm new here and a fresh possessor of a x2 3800.i have a question that will be a bit ridicolous: why many of you got an opteron and not a normal athlon 64 or x2? it really worths the price difference? overclocks better? depends on the chip you are looking @ imho. is Opty 165 @ $250 better deal than X2 3800+ @ $145? NO. But I would still choose 165 over X2 4200+ or 4400+ because as a general rule the Denmarks do OC better. also there are two distinct retail X2 3800+ with two different cores that are both sold as model ADA3800DAA5BVBOX: ADA3800DAA5BV (Manchester core) ADA3800DAA5CD (Toledo core) the Manchesters seem to top out average 2.7-2.8ghz, the Toledos (esp. 0618 stepping), many are stable 2.8ghz @ 1.35v and 3.0ghz @ ~1.525v. In the case of the Manchester, maybe the extra $80 is worth it for the Opty 165, but definitely the Toledo X2 3800+ is a much better deal. Thraxz Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Essentially, toledo 3800+'s don't exist anymore. Manchester only. (They do but limitedly) Basically, I bought my opteron 165 for $240 and it's currently OC'ed to 3.0Ghz on 1.5vcore. That is my case for Optys. Praz Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I wouldn't trade my Optys for anything at this point in time.
Kingfisher Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Good riddence for my Opteron 170. It could not go past 2.6ghz unless you pumped high voltage into it 1.6v + and it ran real choppy compared to my silky new 4400+ X2. Before the price drops Opterons were worth a look, but certainly not now.

And thanks to Kingfishers discovery I am opteron free as well, I sold my FX-57 and ended up with two of them....An opteron 165 would have been my first choice had I not seen Kingfishers results with these 89W 4400s
Guest Halvis Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I just ordered 2 OPTY 165's. Still nervous about the stepping possibilitys. But if your considering Opty 165 vs X2, you might wanna take a look at the 2 responses by Happy Games in this thread. http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62626
