traja12 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Hi I've just purchased a DFI INfinity NF4 SLI to replace my Asus AV8 Deluxe which failed to flash using Asus's software. (I've given up on that mobo it gave me endless trouble). I've alos had to purchase a PCI Express graphics card As I do quite a lot of video I intend to install xp without SP2 on the SATA drive because the Firewire drivers in XP SP2 simply dont work (I've hunted on the net for about three months to find a solution but none worked including replacing the XPSP2 firewire drivers with the originals but to no avail). Since the processor is a dual core will I have problems without XP SP2? I intend to installa another copy of XP on a separate IDE drive with XP SP2 for surfing the net and doing general work manually switching between the two. All and any advice would be greatly appreciated.http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif

All u need to do is make surte that u ahev the latest drives for the firewire. Also are you talking about on board firewire or have u purchased a seperate card? ReelFiles Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 I use ubuntu for web browsing usually, since it's faster and more secure than XP SP2, and I use XP (no updates or anything extra like AV ) for my video stuff. I do a lot of encoding and content creation, so we are some of the few mainly non-gaming oriented users here. Might I suggest getting 2 smaller SATA drives like the 80Gb Hitachi's for RAID-0, to install your OS(s) on?

Good idea with the raid never tried raid previoulsy. I need to spec it up a little better but its not the the high list of priorites since I've managed quite well with an old Athlon XP 3000 previously. Still need to purchase a better DV camera!! For those who dont do any AV work, it is not the firewire that doesnt work (works fine for my external firewire drive) it is that the DV capture doesnt work properly. This is a known issue if you look on DV forums such a adobe premiere pro's forum and mnicrosft are aware of it! WHat actually happens is the capture process throws up an error after 2 mins of capture(that's the longest I can capture under XP SP 2) which doesnt happen with XP SP1 where the size of my harddive is the limit to length of capture. Many thanks and best wishes.
ReelFiles Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Ubuntu is a very popular Linux distribution, basically just another Operating System. You could dual boot with XP and ubuntu. Check out www.Distrowatch.com for more info.

Coors Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 I intend to installa another copy of XP on a separate IDE drive You should just create two partitions and run a dual boot. Then you wouldn't have to manually switch.
