Evil_inc Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 I called to have a field tech to come out and check out my connection (which is very shakey and I can not game for more than 20 minutes before loosing my connection). The guy comes out (and of course we are given the 9 am till september time frame) and replaces the modem (I was not there so I did not see if he tested any of the connections). Two days later it is back to the same thing with a steady connection that drops all the time. I have gone through three wireless routers in two years. One lasted one and a half years then died (It always generated alot of heat). Another lasted three months, it now freezes up three times every day (my father read an article in the baltimore sun [scarcasim]they give THE best diy tech support ever[/tone] and said that the modem, computer, and router need to be shut down for 5 minutes and restarted to fix this so I have, but he dosent understand that that should not have to be done everyday like it has to be now). I ordered a third off of the egg and it arrived DOA, I cant rma it because newegg does not support the warranty on it, and so because of this my parents think that I am to blame for all of it and they are very close to calling frEEaKsquad. My favorite keyboard broke and so I have to use a backup I have I bought a wireless laser mouse, it ate batteries for a living and then promptly died My favorite headphones (now I am a DJ and heavy listener of all music so these mean alot to me) also died. Same goes for my ipod but its breakdown was perfectly timed with a 16 hour trip to the middle of nowhere and back just to drive me all the more insane. I also bought a replacement headset for $60 which is steadily breaking down too. And one of my favorite records was dropped straight down on its edge effectively rendering the first three tracks unplayable These are only recent things that have happened to me... I almost never buy anything, (My enitre rig is over 4 years old now), but what I do buy breaks (except for food, music, or tickets because I dont think those can break). my system has crashed several times and each time it wipes out all my data because I only have on Hard drive (except for the time I put in a seccond one that I put all of my important files on, that too promptly died.) and of course because of an odd schedual I could not get a summer job. Does this just happen to me or does everyone have this kind of luck?
red930 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 I can say this because of experience and my current situation: You are not alone. Despite the shortcomings of everyday life, whether tech related or not, always have a good PMA. Positive Mental Attitude. It makes the world of difference. If any of those devices which have failed on you are still under warranty, contact the manufacturer to get them replaced. poopshotgun Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Don'tknow if this is comforting or not, but I bought 6 Microsoft Natural keyboards (old school PS-2) from my employer because I will inevitably break or spill beer on one or two per year. I actually keep a $10 square-@ss keyboard around to LAN with because I cherish the MS keyboards so much.
centy Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 My sisters DFI Lanparty nf3 ultra-D based machine broke recently. After much testing I sent the motherboard off to DFI and in the meantime I lent her my MSI XP 3000 rig. The nf3 board returned so I took my XP3000 rig back (working in her house), upon getting it home and putting my graphics card etc back in it it would no longer POST, whoops. Lots of testing etc later turns out I now have a dead MSI motherboard and XP3000 cpu. So I go about rebuilding her nf3 rig, still doesn't work So I lend her my Dell optiplex GXa pentium 2 machine, take it to her house and set it up. It won't even power up and never does again. Into the trash it goes. Turns out the power connector on the nf3 board was mashed so ended up gettin a cheap gigabyte board for her. (I woulda bought another nf3 ultra-D myself lol) Anyway the moral of this rambling is: no it's not just you. things break all the time and often they all break at the same time. Keep a spare PC no matter how crappy. Right now I'm down to the rig in my sig and a Celeron500 based machine. I want a decent spare. Evil_inc Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 AND NOW ADULTSWIM FIX DOSENT WORK!!! Also what REALLY irks me is that I have a 30 year old tv, and it works fine! SEARS dosent even make tvs anymore!!! No tech my parents use ever breaks, so when something I use breaks they say that its my fault. I havent gone bannans on my equitment (yet) but I will just say that if the front of my case wasnt made out of soft plastic that I would have broken all my knuckles by now.
