Guest drteming Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 My Opteron 165 hits 3 GHz at just above 1.5v. I have successfully run 3DMark05 and 3DMark06 and have been able to run dual prime95. I always shut down prime95 after about 45 minutes because the cpu temp creeps up to 52-53c. There appears to be no instability but I get nervous because of the temperature. My current cooling setup is a Thermalright XP-90 with a lapped base (mirror finish, nice and flat), AS-5 and a Panaflo 90 mm fan. The ambient temperature is around 25c (love the central airconditioning) and when I run the benchmarks, I take the side panel off and have a house fan blowing into the case (this lowers the temp 2-4 degrees vs the side panel on). Will a new generation air cooling setup drop the temp below 50c and allow me to finish prime95 for 8 hrs. I am thinking about the Tuniq tower 120, Sythe Infinity, Thermalright SI-128, Thermalright Ultra-120 and the TT Big Typhoon. Thanks. For your situation...I would suggest water cooling...In most cases once temps start getting above 50 they just continue to rise and not lower...it seems as though you already have very good air cooling...but then again what do I know, I have not done much with air cooling...out side of Stock HSF from AMD, water has been my only other cooling source... A lot of individuals like the TT Big Typhoon, I imagine someone will point you in the right direction... I still say water would be the best route... lowboy Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Tuniq will be worse the others not sure you can google or here a list of some but bit dated.http://www.overclockers.com/articles373/socketA.asp If was mine I would put a 92mm vantec tornado 119cfm on there with fan controller. I use that set up with a slk 948u thermal and work great cause when benching turn it up and would cool real well and turn down for every day use. Guest drteming Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 I think I've maxed out the thermal capacity of the XP-90. I run the Panaflo fan via a Zalman fan controller and at load, there is no temperature difference at 1/2 speed vs full speed. I've looked through the XtremeSystems forum section on air cooling, but cannot get a good idea on how much benefit I will get by switching to one of the above mentioned coolers. I assume the larger coolers will have a greater capacity at dissipating heat, but how much? I guess water cooling will be the easy way to go...but I want to do this on air...maybe I can wait until winter, close the door and the heating vents, and open the windows... davidhammock200 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 An SI-128 with a 220CFM 120mm fan & a very heavy duty fan controller.
Guest Timmay Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Water would probably be the way for you to go, if not a Big Typhoon or a Tuniq Tower would do best.
ooeric Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 just go buy some simple watercooling gear in the for sale forum. a single 120 rad, pump and block doesnt cost much. should run about the 100$ range give or take if you want a quiet pump, use a mcp350
grasskicker509 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 go with H20!!! the pricing is a bit steep...installing one can be a pain...but once u plunge in...u will see the benefits...not only will it cool better...be quieter...but also it probably will be usuable for future platforms...IE...AM2/AM3...core2 and such...another benefit is that you will be able to add a gpu block or two for the same price as a high end gpu air cooling solution...while providing better temps...less noise...etc... good luck with the OC...im doing the same thing right now...dual priming my opty 330x9 @1.56...so far 4hrs...my stubborn opty wont go past 330 without major voltage...oh well... mrzeld Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 i am kinda liking the Scythe Infinity or the Thermalright SI-128. i have a zalman cnps-9500 and love it. use google and search for the HSF of your choice and add the word "review". there is no substitute for doing your own research. i would definitely get a HSF that can accomodate a 120mm fan. then get a fan that can put out as much CFM as possible. then get a fan controller that is easy to operate from the front of the case. then you fine tune the fan so that you get the most cooling for the most noise you can stand. probably like you, i would love to jump to WC, but have always been chicken to actually do it. air just seems simpler and easier to understand. since you say that you get much better temps with the case side off, you might want to also look into upgrading your intake/exhaust fans in your case too. if your case is properly ventilated, you shouldn't be getting that much better (if any) results with the side off. jumpman Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Si-128, and you're good to go. IF you CAN go water....go for it.
SeanDude05 Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 I'd highly suggest water to get those load temps down. Your approaching about all you can do with air. A simple Radiator, block and pump w/ tubing, clips, liquid can run you less than $200.
