Ghost2520 Posted October 26, 2003 Posted October 26, 2003 I know that www stands for World Wide Web, but why do some sites say www2? or www22? Why do they have the 2's? I think it just makes the site name more confusing to remember... I apoligize in advance for the newb questioin...

Jacket Posted October 26, 2003 Posted October 26, 2003 I'm not certain on this, but I know that my university has a www and a www2 for the graceland.edu address... when we were changing over the site, we used www2 as a backup address while we were getting the new site set up and then moved it over to www2... maybe the site is just on a different server but they don't want to change the address drastically so they tack on the 2 after the www... of course, another idea could be that my school loves to waste my money so they just wanted to register another domain... d3bruts1d Posted October 26, 2003 Posted October 26, 2003 Could be a subdomain, or in the case of google another server. found this bit that I found interesting. As a webmaster you might know that the search engine Google does an update mostly once a month. Several days before the updated database is available at www.google.com you can get a preview of the new data index at www2.google.com and www3.google.com. While that update period the search results vary from time to time so the update got the name Google Dance.
