Motherboard Short?

EDIT:

(problem now appears to be related to RAM with the new CPU)

I've been having a hellish time with my PC recently. After troubles getting my new 4400 CPU working in my DFI mobo (upgraded from a 3000 which worked fine), purchased a new PSU and motherboard before it mysteriously started working again. At least I can build an HTPC out of the spare bits now.

Anyway, I digress. Now that it's working outside my case I put it all back into the case and it starts shutting down either while loading windows, or just into windows. I have discovered that if i leave the PSU OR the mobo out of the case it works fine, it's only when they are both inside the case together that this problem occurs. Even if the PSU is sitting on top of the case it works, but if it is sitting in the case (not screwed in), the PC shuts down...

Any ideas? I am guessing that there is some kind of short between the motherboard and PSU, but i don't see why having it resting on the outside of the case is any different to inside. I have all the standoffs screwed in... I'm out of ideas...

Previous thread here BTW: http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61108 (I think that problem is now resolved).

Have u checked to make sure that there is only standoffs where they need to be i think that on some cases that if you put standoofs near the back of the case where the ps/2 ports are this can cause a short. Also have you tried another PSU inside the case withthe baord and also make sure the backplate is in correctly as this could also cause the board ot short if it is not in correctly

I did check the standoffs before putting the mobo in, the only other PSU >480w I have is a seasonic 500w which was giving me all kinds of grief before i replaced it, so I am a little reluctant to try that again. I guess if there arn't any other easy suggestions I will give that a shot.

Thanks.

Backplate seems ok, I might give the Seasonic a shot, but given my earlier problems I doubt it will even boot.

Just out of interest, I just wraped the PSU in some of that motherboard antistatic foam and placed it in position so it wasn't touching any metal and it is working fine, so sounds like it must be an electrical connection thing...

Ok so changing the PSU fixed the problem ? If i was u i would check to make sure that the other PSU is not expsoed in anyway cuase if u have wrapped it in anti static wrap and i works fine and then u take it out and the problem happens a gain it has to do with the psu. On the PSU that reboots put it outside and tap it with something and c if it cause the comp to reboot or shutdown.

yes, it would appear so, but running a 430w PSU now, so it's not really a long term solution.

Does the PSU need to be grounded to the case to operate properly? Maybe I could just put the enermax back in and leave it wraped with the foam.
