Do I need MORE POWER?

Ok, I got a problem to solve and could definitely benefit from some advice. The problem about being an impulse buyer is on me so no hope there. :) But because of that problem I got this one...

I saw those kick arse prices on the 4800, which was basically less than I originally paid for my 3500 ...its dual core, its faster, ah hell... its better in every regard and I didn't want to pass up the opportunity. What I don't know is if my current setup can accept this new CPU no problem. I don't know how much less/more power my 3500 uses than a dual core - 4800 at that.

I THINK I'm already having power issues but someone more knowledgeable could probably pinpoint it better - may even just be a mobo problem ...or even a HDD problem. Every now and then when I try to boot my system up it hangs at the underscore prompt in DOS. Last time I had that problem my HDD was completely dead and there was nothing random about it. So I got rid of the seagate and put a new hdd in, and no problems after that ...till now. Its rare, but it does happen. I crash in games to the point I have to do a Power cold shutdown (hold the power button 8 seconds) but with windows up and games running with crappy DX9, there are just way too many variables for someone of my limited capcity to pinpoint what the problem is.

I really, and I do mean REALLY not want to buy another PSU but if I have to I guess I got no choice. The setup I'm talking about is in my sig but I'll post it below so its in bigger font. I must point out the mobo is a MSI b/c I know the TT PSUs do not get along with DFI. I can't afford to switch the mobo out b/c then I would be building two new computers instead of building one and upgrading the other ...since neither the RAM or graphics card would work with a DFI.

My Current Rig: AMD 64 3500+ (Idle: 26C) (Load: 36C) - MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum - CORSAIR XMS 2GB PC 3200 - 2-2-2-5 - Stock Retail HSF - TT 420W - GeForcd 6800GT AGP PNY - Samsung 940b - TT Tsunami Case

I did find this review on the power consumption of a 4800 but I don't know how much a 3500 uses. I know the newer processors are using less power but this 4800 is of the 110w version and according to that review it uses more power (granted not much more) under load than the 4400.

Yeah I know the OCZ GX700 or GX600 would have no problems, I'm just trying to avoid...

1) I'm lazy - i hear changing the psu in the Tsunami case is a pita and I don't have much patience lately, especially since I'm flying back and forth to see my sick father

2) I'm cheap - trying to save some cash

Happy_G has said many times Corsair RAM tends to be a pain with DFI boards. In the memory recommendation thread it refers to a seperate thread about trying to debug Corsair memory to get the right settings... which is not a good sign. lol Plus like i said, springing for a new mobo is not really in the picture right now. I don't even want to spring for a new psu, tho I have a feeling I'm gonna have to and HappyG, Roadie and Co. are gonna tell me what I think I already know especially since most TT PSUs suck ...I'm just too stubborn atm to admit it and i'm praying I don't have to break rules 1 and 2. :P

TT 420W
From PSU Guide:
Why the 480W Minimum Requirement? These are the Perfect Examples!

Thermaltake 480W SilentPurePower: ONLY +12V@18A!

http://www.thermaltake.com/purepower/W001314.htm

Thermaltake PurePower 560W: ONLY +12V@22A!

http://www.thermaltake.com/purepower/W0023.htm

Why do people buy these?

There are PSU's for under $30/$40 in the "Complete PSU Guide" with more +12V amperage!

These 2 TT PSU's are the "poster children" for DFI's 480W+ requirement &

based on these it should be a 600W+ requirement!

Roundup: 14 Power Supply Units from Thermaltake: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/dis...su-roundup.html :P:(

For 1X video card get the OCZ PowerStream 520W, for SLI/Crossfire get the OCZ GXS 700W! :)

Despite the nice, bright red letters I missed the 480W requirement. But in my defense..! I have only had about 10hrs sleep the last 3 days or so. Thanks man. :)

I looked at OCZ (since my other psu is the GX700W version), Enermax, Fortron, and Epsilon and it seems like that all the good ones are around the same damn price anyway. The rebate rules say you can't submit multiple rebate requests for the same item, so I'm PRAYING they are not like PNY and will actually distinguish the difference btwn their 600W model and 700W model for the rebates. If they do then going with the 600W model is $40 less, and since I won't OC this MSI machine or do SLI (AGP gpu) the $40 less makes a difference.

I looked at the Powerstream model, even though it has shipping charges while the GX600 did not it was still $1 less with the $25 MIR, but... less wattage and I'm not planning on tinkering with the settings anyway.

More than I wanted to spend (especially since I didn't want to spend anything) but what the hell, as a guy its all about MORE POWER! (cue Tim Taylor grunting)

By the way, I REALLY hate Rebates... what a jacked up way to screw consumers. It's almost as bad as when gas stations lower the price by 5 cents letting everyone cheer for 2-3 weeks and then raising it 30 cents.
