The Joker Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Hello DFI citizens, i have a quick question? Cool and Quiet! , can someone tell me is there any point? i tried installation once following the guide on the AMD site but nothing seemed to happen. I am not overclocking, can someone please either tell me how to install the DFI way , which is usually the best.
Capt Proton Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Cool N' Quiet will reduce your CPU multiplier when you don't need it. This will reduce heat and power consumption, and the fan speed on your HSF. Three things to do, install the AMD driver, enable it in the BIOS, and in Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Power Options, on the Power Schemes tan, choose "Minimal Power Management". It is said many places, including the moderators, not to use this if overclocking.
calvintang Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 try using the seach button... i had a thread about them a few months ago...
wevsspot Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 If C&Q were working properly ideally you wouldn't notice anything happening. In the background however, your BIOS and AMD drivers would be changing the multiplier and reducing the vcore on your CPU when your PC wasn't doing much. In theory it's a neat idea, and a great sales pitch, but honestly do you trust a Windows based OS to interface with your device driver and constantly change your CPU multiplier and vcore on an 'as-needed' basis? For me C&Q has always meant confounded and quirky. Of course I'm always OC'd so my focus may be a little different than yours. The San Diego core is a fairly cool running and energy efficient core at stock volts and clocks. IMHO I'd just say not to C&Q. Zoli Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I subscribe to the same idea, C&Q is a tricky thing to use. I think it sucks that you have to install those AMD drivers and after that you cannot OC. I think sooner or later you will need to OC and that driver is just messing things up. I personally have an OC setting in the CMOS reloaded and also an underclock setting in which I have the CPU multiplier set at 5X, Vcore just a little over 1V and Ram volts at minimum (2.5V). I use this setting when I watch movies, browse the net, or when I leave my comp overnight to download things with emule or DC++ or whatever. Sorrento Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I had C n' Q enabled on another system and it worked great... when idle the 3700+ went from default 2.2 ghz and 1.375 volts down to 1.1 ghz and just 1.06 volts... this reduced the power consumption, cpu temperature and allowed me to reduce all the fans speeds so noise was reduced as well. C n' Q doesn't work while overclocking, it could be dangerous trying to so its better to leave it disabled if thats the case. My DFI motherboard has never been able to activate C n' Q, but alas the motherboard was made for overclocking so I would never use it in this system anyway; I think it was not able to work because of the BIOS version I am using. Right now the system I had it enabled with no longer has it enabled because I prefered to overclock that 3700+ a little and because I am using Folding@Home... so the cpu is never idle and there was no point leaving C n' Q enabled and there was a good point overclocking it a bit. swaaye Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I've been overclocked to 2.6 since January now and have been using RMClock as CnQ. Works great. Saves tons of AC. Like 70W diff between full power and 1.1 GHz .95v. I run my comp 24/7 and this way not only do I save tons of AC, but the CPU isn't really overclocked at all the majority of the time. You have to use the VID Special Control instead of the hard voltage adjustment tho or even RMClock can't change VID. I run 113% I believe. wevsspot Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Did you enable both C&Q as well as CPU Throttling? Also, you need to create a sig. and read the forum rules.
