DFI-Expert + NVIDIA 7800 Driver Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi There.

Although this is my first post, I've been reading the forums for a while .. what a GREAT resource :)

PROBLEM ....

I installed a BFG 7800 GT OC in June, with the default drivers (8.1.9.6) and everything seemed to work fine with a stable system.

Last week I bought 'Age of Empires III' but it would not run. Ended up with loss of signal to the Monitor, although i could alt+tab back to another window with no problem and the Monitor display fine.

Updated the NVIDIA drivers with the result that I would only get as far as the 'Windows loading' screen (Windows LOGO with the scrolling bar below) before loss of video signal. Windows seemed to carry on and load as normal (sound worked and keyboard shortcuts to turn-off all worked).

Re-installed original Drivers and did a bit of testing with DXDIAG. Discovered that the 3D test for DX7 and DX8 were great .. but DX9 caused the loss of video signal.

Spent over an hour on the phone with BGF Tech who final said that it must be a GPU issue and to RMA the Card.

The RMA would take 3 weeks and thats too long for me to go PC-less so I bought a new card to use (thinking to sell the original when returned). A nice shiny BFG 7900 GT OC.

Installed the new card and it worked as ecpexted, for a new driver-less graphics card, UNTILL ... I installed the NVIDIA Drivers? Then loss of video signal again.

I guess I have a wrong setting someplace in my configuration.

Can anyone help ?

ALREADY TRIED ............

1. Set the system back to basics with a single stick of ram and properly cleared the BIOS

2. Tried various NVIDIA Drivers (including latest BETA) .. all with same result

3. Cards work fine with another system

.................................................................................

I did wonder about the PSU. Its has dual 12V Rails @ 15A ..... I know that a single rail would not really do the card, but I use a Y-Power splitter which plugs the PCI-Ex 6pin into two molex, one for each rail. That should be more than enough for a single card.

Well I still wonder about the PSU, but you can look to that later, download Driver Clean Pro, clean out all Nvidia Drivers, then install the chipset drivers, go through the reboot routine, then install the latest Nvidia Drivers....I had the problem before with AOE III so I updated the game and no more problems, so you might want to give that a shot and download the new patches as well. If none of these work then you migh start looking for an OCZ GamerXtreme...

Thanks for answering guys :)

Kingfisher: .. the Atrix PSU has both a 24 pin and an 8 pin. New Install so no previous card.

Watsonte: .. AoE3 just hi-lighted the problem for me. I did use Driver Clean pro to clear out the original NVIDIA Driver before trying the updated ones. This is a new Rig (all new parts) so no previous drivers to worry about :) Once the latest drivers are installed I cant get past the Windows Boot Sreen :(

Thanx

Odd....Okay have you tested your memory? Run Memtest to check the stability of you memory and see if you encounter errors then...

Still Problems !!!!

So far I have .....

... I have run Memtest for 24 hours with no errors

... Bought an Enermax Liberty 620W with Dual +12 Rails @ 22Amps

... Re-installed windows xp

Still the same problems, even with a new install. Whenever an nVidia driver is installed the video signal drops when the driver loads on re-boot.

One thing I have noticed is that the Fan on the Graphics Cards stop just before the loss of signal. Same thing happens on both Cards.

Unusuall to have the same thing happen on two brand new cards! .. could it be the Expert?

Did you play any games b4 Age of Empires III,how did it run then?

Still seems driver related to me,I kept getting crashes in BF2 w/a new lcd monitor, but it had run fine on a crt,I hadn't installed monitor driver yet, after I did no more CTD

UPDATE ::: Tried the card in a friends system (Asus Mobo) and it works great ... looks like it IS an issue with the Expert Motherboard.

So what do I test now?

1. Are there any BIOS settings that would effect this?

2. Is the Card incompatible? .. Does anyone else have a working BFG 7900 on an Expert board?

3. Is the mobo the problem, and should I RMA it?

Thanks for the help :)

Well maybe its time for an RMA of the video card...I dont know though, AOE3 gave me all sorts of issues when running with the 7800GTXs I had, but after patching the game I was able to run without any issues, heat was one of the other elements that factored into the game crashing...

I dont think its a problem with the motherboard....email Happy Games, his email is in his sig, he could answer your questions about the RMA...

Have you tried other video cards, try the Friends card...? Just to see if you get the same result

SOLVED !!!!! :) :) :)

I use the same keyboard/mouse/monitor to control two computers ...... it turns out that the KVM switch (high quality one) wont work with the latest graphics cards .. they need to be connected directly to the monitor :(

I'm sure there's a moral in there somewhere!

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions :)
