-attritus- Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 I think I have just managed to corrupt my first bios, I accidently hit the power off switch whilst the computer was booting and upon trying to reboot I have the 4 debug led's... :'( Also the harddrive light is on... I've tried clearing the cmos a few times (using the described method) and I'm in the midst of trying the 8 hour cmos clear. From my limited understanding I believe clearing the cmos will not change a thing if my bios is corrupt, so therefore does anyone know of a place in Australia that can help me source a new bios chip? I also must admit I'm a tad disappointed that a high end mobo would not come with dual bios! My last 4 intel boards came with this feature and to be honest I kind of started to expect that it would be a standard feature and didn't think to look for it! Oh well you live and learn... EDIT: Sorry for the previous post, here's updated sig and info. BTW This machine was running rock solid stable for over 3 months with no changes to bios when this occured! (dual prime 12hrs stable) As previously stated, this all occured after shutting down system during POST.
lowboy Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 I would try the 24hr cmos clear before giving up on it as it has worked for many. You may post over in bios section to Tmod as he may know of AUS. supplier of flashed chips.
jwc93061 Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 You might try re-flashing the bios before you just up and replace the chip. It may very well be corrupt, but not damaged. Just a thought. Long CMOS clearing are good, you're already doing that. JW
-attritus- Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Thanks for the response I will try the 24 cmos clear! It failed the 8 hour clear, so I'm praying to the big man above that the 24 hours does it!!! Just a quickie, when it states to hit the ON button to clear the capacitors, I have read people experience a second or so where the machine tries to power up. Mine has no response whatsoever! Also I still wonder whether my HDD light being on is consistent with the usual 4 debug light scenario. Cheers!
lowboy Posted August 10, 2006 Posted August 10, 2006 Here is how to check psu: http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/show...ad.php?t=137886 and how to jump psu but if WCd you most likely now how. http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/show...ad.php?t=118964
-attritus- Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I think I didn't clearly state what I meant regarding the psu! The psu is fine, although I suppose it can hurt checking the rails! (yes I know how to jump start a psu, plenty of practice with water cooling lol ) Its just one of the steps in the 'no boot' instuctions requires you to press the power button to drain the capacitors. I have read numerous posts where people state that they see a flicker of action, like the system is trying to power up! I kind of assume you shouldn't see anything happen when the psu is turned off, but wondered after reading a few other posts! Just another 12 hours to go I think I might invest in a bios flashing unit. This is my first AMD rig and I must say that the NF4 seems very fickle when compared to all my previous intel rigs!!! davidhammock200 Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 This is my first AMD rig and I must say that the NF4 seems very fickle when compared to all my previous intel rigs!!!Ah, but sooo many more OC options!
-attritus- Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Ah, but sooo many more OC options! lol, yes and no... My last two intel boards (ic7-max3 and p4p800-e) had enough options to get half decent overclocks. Although I must admit to being floored by the stock standard 40% OC most amds achieve without breaking a sweat! Anyway back to my dilemma
-attritus- Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 21 hours later and no cheese... Not happy! I noticed that tmod doesn't supply to overseas clients, I have managed to source a new bios chip that should be here next week I'm also looking at acquiring a eprom programmer. If anyone has successfully used a Willem programmer on a SST49LF004B chip I would love to hear from you... Cheers
-attritus- Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Ok still not working, I have read that the leds mean certain things. I'm trying to elimate the cause, can I assume if I only left the cpu in and tried to power up it should only display 3 leds? (if the cpu is good of course!) -attritus- Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 OK now update! Cut a long story short.... Flashed a number of bios chips but no success, acquired a bios chip out of a brand new ultra-d still no go! I then RMA'd the mobo (because the store didnt have the means to test the mobo...) and recieved a brand new board one month later. Plugged it up to discover I still had the 4 debug lights Next got a mate to bring his comp round (should have done this in the first place...), hooked his psu to my comp and guess what BINGO... My NeoHE 550 had chucked a wobbly, strange thing is I measured the rails when first suggested and they read fine (without major load though, think this might be critical)! (hence my wild goose chase) Anyway replaced the NeoHE 550 with a TruPower2 550 and its been smooth sailing since (knock on wood). For those that responded with suggestions thanks for the help!!!
