Something To Try

I was looking at the little window AC unit in my dorm, and happened to notice that the dimensions, particularly the 2-D dimensions of the side that blows *COLdangit air outward, are almost identical to the side(s) of some mid towers.

So obviously that says enough but for those who for some reason might not be able to put 2 and 2 together, the idea is of course to somehow mod the AC unit to replace or fit snugly in a cut-out case side. Of course to maxime the airflow a huge amount of exhaust would be needed.. but regardless of that the air inside would be very very cold even if there was no "conventional" case airflow. Equally nice is that the air would be - 100% dry. So I'm planning on trying this at least temporarily to see what it can offer, (I've searched the forums I dont think people have tried this that I know of)

What do you guys think?

what makes you think the air would be dry?? I was pretty sure that AC units have moisture in them....which is why in the winter they can freeze up. I would research this more before ruining your system. I have Central Air Conditioning, so i can't go check for myself.

I dont think youd run into humitiy problems. There wouldnt be enough "wet" air to do anything unless it was raining. And as far as air conditioning goes. Isnt it only swamp coolers that pump humidity into the air? Not air condiditoners?

you may be right. i thought that air conditioners are designed to trap moisture, thus spurting out dry air. But having that moisture buildup so close to your precious computer components may be a bad idea....Something i was just recalling....if you go outside, you often see air conditioners dripping....i wouldn't want that so close to MY computer.

good point about the collected water... pretty much the point of an air conditioner is that it takes moisture away from the air, which in turn creates solid water, but that would be hopefully under control since it consolodates on the outside part of the AC.

Also I meant to specify that the entire unit would be inside rather than sticking your tower up to the windows.. it would still cool the same in or out obviously. The whole thing is about the size of a regular - midsize monitor it's perfect to bring inside and fit right onto a system.

But don't worry, I'll play with it to see where the collected moisture goes so that I can control it or abort. or both, but I'm pretty confident it'll work for cooling, so I'm gonna go for it. I'll let you guys know.

How bout a duct from the AC to the PC CPU HS :D and the only condensation you'll experience is on the outside of your case IF the outside humidity is really high otherwise you'll get the best temps you"ve ever seen :P

Excellent idea keep us posted ;)

One thing to consider would be the noise level. You'd go deaf. Air conditioners are loud as it is, and that's with half of it sticking outside....imagine how loud it would be if you have the whole thing indoors sitting 6 feet from you. Talk about goin deaf

nice idea kobalt!

actually if you've ever seen my case in the gallery I have the sunbeam overclockers kit, which is an aluminum 80mm duct.. i have that going from my Tt Volcano 11+ to 2 unused 5.25 drive slots, and filtered and grilled there.

All i really need to do is duct the AC to that spot. As is, the AC in the window is only about 2 feets from the intakes on the front of my case. So I'll do that and take pics.

Thanks for the ideas
