Im having a little trouble following what your talking about.

You have to plug your DSL connection into the router, in the proper place, usually there is an uplink slot on the router.

Then plug your computers from the router into the NIC.

Hope that helps, but like i said, im having trouble uderstanding your problem

would help to know what dsl service you have, what router you are using, etc....

if you want to figure it out for yourself go to www.dslreports.com. they have sections for probably every isp and many faqs on setting them up in different situations.

if its only a two port router(one for dsl in and one for uplink) your gonna need a switch if you wanna connect mulitple computers. Also make sure you configure your router correctly if its pppoe or wether it uses static address and the like.

Ok, I am an expert at routing because i do it for many people.

What you kneed.

Cable Modem - DSL Modem

4 port switch or 2 port swith

or insted of the switch i recomend a linksys router

4 port for expantion +the firewall helps

cat5 cable, get this at a computer netwoking store

circuit city overprices. Should be about 10 dollars for 100 feet

3com network cards or the cheapeast ones you can find 10/100 mbs

cat5 patch cable about 5 pices 7-10 ft long for any extra close wireing

ok, now get the DSL modem all set, and working, now, plug the cat5 cable form the dsl modem into the WAN "wide aira network" port, then you should have, a 1,2,3,4 ports, if you got a 4 port router. Then plug a pice of cat5 patch into the no.1 port on the router. Then plug the other end of the cat5 cable into the computer. Boom, that computer is set. Then for the longer running cable, "assuming you had the dsl modem close to your main computer", do the same steps, plug the cat5 cable into the back of the routter, pref. the 2nd port, then run the cable however you please and plug the other end into the eathernet card in the other computer, boom. Now for file sharing, go to start - program files or all programs - assesories - communication, then click on home netwoking wizard. This will work very well, "make shure you are getting the internet on both computers. You should not have to do anything but remove your old dileup service. When your are in the home netwoking wizard use all default settings unless you know what you are doing. The pictures will guid you along, sorry about the spelling
