ghuraba Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Hi there. Is there a difference between the Memtest used in the bios and Windows Memtest? I can run the bios version of Memtest for 8 hours+ with no errors but if I use the Windows version I get errors. I've never used Memtest for Windows before so I'm not sure about this program. I can run Prime for 12 hours +, SuperPi and OCCT with no errors. I tested 1 stick of ram for 6 hours with no errors using Windows Memtest so I'm about to run the other stick to see if that gives me errors. In the last week I have had a few random re-boots, even just browsing the internet. This is why I decided to run a few tests. Could instability in my ram cause random reboots? I was going to buy 2GB of G-Skill HZ PC4000 this week but the place I buy from is out of stock. I'm using the following bios settings: FSB Bus Frequency – 255 LDT/FSB Frequency Ratio - 3x CPU/FSB Frequency Ratio – 11x PCI eXpress Frequency - 105Mhz CPU VID StartUp Value - STARTUP CPU VID Control - 1.4v CPU VID Special Control – Auto LDT Voltage Control - 1.20v Chip Set Voltage Control - 1.50v DRAM Voltage Control - 2.9v DRAM Configuration Settings: DRAM Frequency Set - 180=RAM/FSB:11/12 Command Per Clock (CPC) - Enable CAS Latency Control (Tcl) - 3 RAS# to CAS# delay (Trcd) - 04 Bus Clocks Min RAS# active time (Tras) - 08 Bus Clocks Row precharge time (Trp) - 04 Bus Clocks Row Cycle time (Trc) - 12 Bus Clocks Row refresh cycle time (Trfc) - 16 Bus Clocks Row to Row delay (Trrd) - 02 Bus Clocks Write recovery time (Twr) - 02 Bus Clocks Write to Read delay (Twtr) - 02 Bus Clocks Read to Write delay (Trwt) - 03 Bus Clocks Refresh Period (Tref) - 3120 Cycles DRAM Bank Interleave – Enabled DQS Skew Control - Auto DQS Skew Value - 0 DRAM Drive Strength - Level 7 DRAM Data Drive Strength - Level 1 Max Async Latency - 8.0 Nano Seconds DRAM Response Time - Normal Read Preamble Time - 6.0 Nano Seconds IdleCycle Limit - 256 Cycles Dynamic Counter - Disable R/W Queue Bypass - 16 x Bypass Max - 04 x 32 Byte Granularity - Disable(4 Bursts) Michael
ReelFiles Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I prefer the windows version, the way I think of it is that I want stability while running the OS, since I don't hang out in the bios all day long. Did you search the OCDB for similar setups?
ghuraba Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 No I haven't as I thought I had a stable PC. I think it is the ram/motherboard not getting along as this ram 'Corsair 1GB DDR XMS4400CAS2.5 TwinX (TCCD v1.1)' won't even run at 200mhz, ram/fsb 1/1 @default volts 2.6. I have to run at CAS3 @2.9 volts using the 180 divider to get it to even boot into Windows with the timings I posted. Michael
Brother Esau Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Good point Reelfiles!!!! And what up?
ReelFiles Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Those sticks were tested by Corsair using 2T 2.5-4-8-4 @2.8v. Nonetheless, running them slower but stable is a better option in my opinion, performance is barely affected running them on a divider or even CAS 3. Try: CPC - disabled Trc - 7 Trfc - Auto Trfc - 17-19 What's up Brother Esau? Haven't gotten a chance to reply to your novel yet, but I will. LOL JK. ghuraba Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Are you sure these sticks are T2? I always thoguht they were 1T. Here are the ones I own: http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/produ...024-4400C25.pdf Michael
ReelFiles Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Look at my signature ... same RAM, 2T. Corsair does not mention T1 or T2 anywhere on their site or in the spec pdf. I had to find out from Corsair tech support myself, he told me that they always tested those modules at 2T 2.5-4-8-4 2.8v. You should be able to run them at those settings 1:1 with FSB Bus Frequency at 255. But if you have to you can use a divider with no noticable performance hit, as I posted earlier. It's your advanced timing settings that are throwing you off.
ghuraba Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Thanks for that information. Well I just tried 200mhz, Ram/Fsb 1/1, [email protected] volts and Memtest still fails. I'm going to test the other stick on its own now as it might be that stick that is faulty. Michael P.S. are the timings you posted Trfc = Auto and Trfc 17-19 a choice of two to try or did you make a mistake with one of the letters? OtisN89 Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I have corsair RAM and a DR and I also had trouble when I tried to run the RAM fast I have it at 208mhz now and it gets an error in Memtest but its stable in OCCT but anyhigher with the FSB/RAM ratio and it won't pass OCCT. ReelFiles Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I just posted what worked for me, and my RAM is at 265MHz atm. I meant trfc- Auto or 17-19, sorry. I would suggest bios Version 704 2BTA, but that's user preference. How long did you run memtest86 for? I find it odd that you would get errors in memtest for windows but not the dos version. ghuraba Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I ran Memtest86 all last night, I think it was about 30 full passes of all tests. I would not pay any attention to memtest failing in Windows if it wasn't for these randow re-boots I've been getting for about 1 week. All other stability/games was stable 12 + hours. Memtest for Windows fails after about 90 minutes mostly. Michael
