OsamaBinAthlon+ Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I was the lucky buyer of a nice "naked" Opteron 146 Processor from dfi-street member wangerin. Anyways what is a good heatsink to use with a naked processor and what modifications does the heatsink require if any, wangerin recommended some but I would appreciate any of yalls impute aswell. CPDMF Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Bolt downs like the Big Typhoon or the Zalmans work just fine. When using the Zalmans I just run the screws through the DFI back plate and apply even pressure. XP-90's can be made to work as well by modifying the retension bracket. OsamaBinAthlon+ Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 How about this anything special required if i use that one? ?
CPDMF Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 It will work just fine. The instructions will show using two standoffs on the motherboard, don't use them, just use screws to go through the heatsink mounts to the backplate on the motherboard. OsamaBinAthlon+ Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 awesome. I'm going to order through SVC to benefit dfi-street anyways I figured I would order the evercool chipset fan while I was applying some as5. should I get thermal paste remover for my old processor and heatsink and chipset or just alocohol (what kind of alcohol is it again)
CPDMF Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 91% or better Isopropyl. It takes a little effort to get that crap DFI uses on the chipset off. While your in there might want to mod the chipset to SLI. You never know when that might come in handy.

CPDMF Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 You have the same amount of patience I do. Why wait when you can pay a little extra and have it right away. I have done business with wangerin and that CPU will be there quick.
OsamaBinAthlon+ Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 i usually can wait but if that opteron 146 is sitting there with no heatsink I'll be a sad panda and usually companies take longer than ppl.
