dfi-fan Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 what is the better chip in your eyes for playing games like cod2, hl2 and counter strike source either the single core 64 4000 or the duel cores 3800, 4200 or 4600 not picked which one yet in socket
ilikeducttape Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 definitely go dual core. it is the way of the future. the 3800 is a pretty good clocker for a cheap price. look through the OCDB and see how people are clocking with those chips. i just got my 4400 a couple days ago, but i havent had time to do the new build yet. Fogel Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 go dual core Though might i recommend looking at these chips: - 3800 - 4400 - 4800 - Opteron 165 Except for the 3800 the advantage these all have the 1MB L2 Cache. Slightly lower clock speeds, but 1) they still out perform their 512kb brothers/sisters, and 2) you can always OC them to make up the difference. The 3800 is just a good all around deal that people have had good luck with. Either way I don't think you can go wrong, but those are the chips I'd focus my research on ...and have been since I'm building one atm as well. arklab Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Not to be a wet blanket, but I'm not sure you will see all that much better performance over what you have. I'm assuming this is just a CPU swap? I'd wait a while and see how all this new stuff shakes out. Looks like you may need new video, PSU, and other stuff in the future anyway. And for a gammer, I'd think that a DirectX 10 board(s) would be desired - when available. Finally a more direct answer (lol) - with the Intel core-duo stuff having dual-core and four megs of catch, the future seems clear - but that is the FUTURE. 510kut Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 hmm I'm trying to decide on which dual core to get. Would it be worthwhile to get the 4200 over the 3800? Or if I were to get the 4200 should I just get the 4400? Is the 1mb cache worth it?
Anospa Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I just grabbed the 4400+ for $235 over at monarch. Still can't believe how much the prices have dropped...
dbilz Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Opteron 165 is definitely the best bang/buck option, hoping you get a good stepping you can OC is to a 800$ processor. But if you have the money and dont want to OC then get a 4600+ X2 AM2.
dfi-fan Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 thanks but i dont do intel (not in a million yrs), the cards brand new the top of what i could afford, i dont want to re install to get the new board(yet), not going to go am2 yet this lot is less than a yr old and am not allowed to buy all in 1 go either (marrital decree). and the price of chips over here now amd 64 4000 under £100 inc vat and 3800 is £111.00 inc 4400 is around £150 ish but ive always been very unable to decide given a choice. bugger it i might aswell drop in 2 gig low lantency corsair
sailindawg Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Regarding the original options presented, go for the less costly cpu with the most performance. If a 3800 fits the wallet, then so be it. If you can afford the xtra $50, then get the 2x1MB L2 cache chips like the 4400. The 4400's are going for $235, shipping included. Hard to beat that price, but seem to oc to ~ 2700-2800, depending on your board, psu, RAM. On Newegg, the single core San Diego 3700 was on sale for ~$109 ! My SD is priming right now at 2915 MHz. I'm going to let it prime for at least 12 hours. Previously, I got 7 hours stable + 3D stability at this speed. Now for the real test when I put my newly purchased 4400 in to see how that compares. I found my max oc on my 3700, now to do the same with the 4400 and compare.
Brother Esau Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I have just one thing to say...... Operton= Lucid Gameing!!! I have owned a x2 4200 chip and lets say I was not really impressed! But the Operton 175 chip that I just bought absolutely ROCK'S Just at optimized defaults it benches almost 14,000 more over my 3700+ Sandiego at the same setting in bios. DOD SOURCE Absolutely fly's I actualy with no exageration am lookin for the slow down button running the game no lie dude !!! I would deffinately say the Opertton warrents the price and most people here will agree It's probaly the best chip for our kind of systems I just overclocked mine to 2.5 ghz off of the starting line it's a natural overclocker and believe it or not I dont have a locked multi on mine. Ran tests yesterday and all last night stable , stable stable and it runs really cool overclocked im idle on air at 30-31 c dual instances of stress prime for 1 1/2 hrs 37- 39c full load. Get the Operton you will be thankfull if you do!!!!
sailindawg Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 believe it or not I dont have a locked multi on mine. I thought Opty's like, all other AMD's 64 cpu's, were only unlocked downward ? Essentially, your Opty 175 cannot use a multi >11, all multi's <11 are available. Right now the price differential between a 4400 Toledo and an Opty 175 is ~$300. Personally, I'm cheap and went with the 4400 ! I'll spend the difference on a GX2 7950 vid card.
Brother Esau Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Well thats not true old boy! The multi at stock is x11 on the 175 Operton and actualy for some reason the multiplier is unlocked on my chip it actualy goes up too like 20 or 22 in bios on my board, dont quite know whats up with that because from my understanding also the multiplier is locked on these chips I happened to choose the 175 over the 165 because the multi at default is at 11 where the 165 is at x9 default! dont really understand how my multiplier registers that high in bios but it does where my sandiego I dont think went up that high. Just started experimenting with the overclocking so I am a noob at it. But I know for a fact that thwe srock multi on this chip is indeed x11
