Rency Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Over the past few months my computer has periodically crashed while playing world of warcraft. I've updated to the latest drivers and have done everything I could think of to try to pinpoint the cause. I'm now trying to figure out if the RAM is the cause and have decided to try a replacement. I'm currently using Kingston ValueRam (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...&Tab=2&NoMapp=0) which I think might be the culpurit since it seems generic and they don't have heatsinks on them. (Although I don't believe I'm overclocking them, I'll go check the timings because I just realized the recommended 3-3-3 timing specs might not be default on my motherboard). (Ram passed the downloadable microsoft memory test) My first question is about compatibility for new RAM. I read in the manual that the board will only support up to 512mb sticks of unbuffered memory. I seem to recall reading elsewhere that 1gb sticks were fine and would like clarification on that. My second question is could the northbridge or video card gpu be overheating. (The positioning of the video card gpu is directly over the northbridge) My third question is for any suggestions on very compatible memory (not necessarily very fast) for my motherboard in both 2x512 or 2x1gig. Thanks.
watsonte Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 The kingston value ram would be the problem, its never gotten along with DFI boards, also in terms of what you board will and will not except, your looking for DDR Memory 2x1GB Kits work best, OCZ memory is always a good choice, Mushkin and G.Skill would be other good options. If you not looking to overclock anything PC3200 will be fine, if you do plan to overclock PC4000 is what you will want.
Rency Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Any clarification on why the manual states *Supports x8/x16 non-ECC unbuffered DIMMs, up to 512MB DDR Devices"
lowboy Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 get some OCZ pc4000 EB or XTC 2X1gb very good support don't worry about what manual shows it will be fine. When manual was produced they didn't have 1GB sticks.

Should work. This is about the same price after rebate if you decide to overclock in the future.
Rency Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Oh so I would be able to overclock with the ram I listed above in the future even though its listed as PC3200? I also just realized that the manual says that raising the voltage to 2.8V for the RAM is supposed to help with compatibility issues. I believe my ram is supposed to run at 2.6V and was wondering if there could be any potential issues with raising the voltage to 2.8. I also read somewhere in that memory selection guide stating to disable 2T if I ran into problems with running 2x512mb chips. Thanks for the input. lowboy Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 That ram works well but is limited to about 220-225mhz.It does not OC well. The other suggestions would be better if you ever want to OC.
