Overclocking woes

Recommended Posts

Ok so newegg sent me my replacement ram for the one missing from my order, but I didn't want to wait so I bought some from Compusa, Gskill ddr400 2x512mb; anyway after putting it in and setting it to 2t (now i am at 4x512mb), I started getting random lockups in 3d apps like Halo, and aquarium screensaver, that required a reboot. I then loosened my timings to 3,4,4,8 and set the Vdimm to 2.7v, 3/2 divider for 369mhz in dual channel, most other settings left on auto, which didn't fix it; I then lowered my clocks till they stopped, got to HTT x4 277@2450mhz and the lockups went away. This is only happening in 3d apps and no where else. Now I tried upping my Vcore (temps are fine 50c at load, chipset 43c) all the way to 1.5v and HTT x3, at 290@2610mhz and everything works fine even prime is stable 8+ hours but I would still get random 3d lockups. For the life of me I don't know whats causing it whether hardware or software and if I pull the new Ram out it goes away and I can run at 1t 290@2610, maybe higher but I am fine with FX60 speeds. I have all the dual core patches and XP is all up to date as is DX9. I am going to run memtest to see if all is well with the ram but if its OK, I am not sure where to go from there. I can live with 2450 till I can afford some good DDR500 2x1gb, but there must be some other settings I can try to resolve this. I have upped the NBtoHT link voltage one setting above (1.9 I think) and have lowered the Vcore back to stock and everything else is stock and running fine till i pass 277 HTT. I also played with the mem settings others have done on the rs482 Infinity. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My cpu stepping is CCBWE 0551 upmw, not the best but it was perfectly stable at 2.6ghz in prime and daily stuff running 24/7.

Is the overclock on yer card stable? That psu doesn't look too promising. Overclocked nf4 w/4sticks? and 450watts@ +3.3V@32A, +5V@30A, +12V1@15A, +12V2@17A, [email protected], +5VSB@2A I dunno looks kinda' iffy. Does yer' psu blow out really hot air?(Sign of overloading) Do you ever smell ozone when the computer is on.(Sign of leaking psu caps)

You back off yer overclock with 4 sticks and all is well?.Or you pull 2#sticks raise yer' overclock back up and all is good? I'm sorta' focused on yer' psu. I don;t know which rails feed the dimms on nf4 infinity. Or even if thats the problem Does it ever have cold-start problems? Can you borrow a larger known good psu anywhere. Just to see if that's it.

I saw this topic in another thread but I wanted to add my own info. Just put together a new system, been having some random reboots. My new psu, an Xclio 450bl, has very unstable voltages, at least compared to my old 350w Ultra Xfinity. Both are dual rail but I never tried the ultra on the DFI board. Could be the monitoring software and I have been overclocking a bit on this new setup. ...

I think he answered his own question over a week ago. ;)

I found the problem, after that other problem in the earlir thread i reformatted windows, but i wasn't paying close attention to the driver installs and ended up using the 64 bit version insead of the 32 bit one. Since I was stable in everything else and it only locked up in 3d apps this makes me believe that that was the issue. I am going to test this out now will report back later, and thanx for all the replies. And yes the PSU was cheap but since running it for awhile the voltages stopped all the fluctuations and everything has been running fine. I was on a tight budget and I really want modular so i am saving up now for a better one down the road, plus I read reviews and alot of people believe Xclio gets there psu parts, if not having them actually built, by antec so maybe its not so bad. I won't ever be going SLI with it so I figured it would hold me for a little while.

So I started having the 3d lockups and took the offered advice and replaced my psu with my old Ultra Xfinity 350w, not esactly ideal for overclocking but I wanted to test to see if maybe it was the psu, after reinstalling windows because of fouled up registry tweaks i started to get reboots right after windows loaded; the ultra while lower in wattage was very stable compared to the xclio cheapy 420w. http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=109207 I also wanted to get back to 2.6ghz oc and so i messed with my settings till i found that if I up my NB to HT link voltage to max setting my overclock stabilized and in everything but 3d apps it was stable; my vcore was upped to 1.425 but i am going to see if it can handle lower voltage. The 165 w/ccbwe 0551 stepping isn't turning out as bad as others have said. I also tried out mem test and the new ram I got from newegg was giving errors so I yanked it out putting me back to one 1gb but I can run at 1t again and every bit of instablity and other issues went away. I am returning the ram and psu and going to put the funds towards a better psu, newegg dosen't carry Ultra so I am taking recommendations for psu best suited for DFI, ATI based boards prefferably 500w or betterfor around $100.

Edit: my NB temp is hovering around 45c to 47c no higher or lower. If I wanted to add a chipset fan do I have to yank the motherboard out? If yes is it worth it or is that temp range OK? Smartguardian temp monitors turn red when the temps are to high right? Since the temp is in yellow even at 47c. Before i replaced my stock cpu cooler it was hitting 51c and turning red so i am assuming its not ot excessive. My ambient temps are high right now also.
