NET.Framework----> Pro's + Con's

Branjo

Recommended Posts

I dont have much of an educated opinion on this but i'd like to read some,

I've noticed some software wont install without it, so is it Good or Bad mmKay

Please no MS links, as soon as I click on a link of huge PC Jargon I just get bored and close it.

DFI street is the only place I read things through to the end so only user opinions please.

Thanks

.NET = resource hog

waste of space

only install if it you need it

ie: Crossfire ATI drivers (officialy Catalyst...if you only have a single ATI card though go with Omega + ATI Tool)

Sony Vegas / Acid / etc (these all require .NET 1.1)

other than that...I can't think offhand of any other programs that I use that NEED .NET

no programs other than these BENEFIT from having it either...so if you don't need it, don't install it.

Looking at your sig...a single X800XT AIW = you shouldn't need official CAT drivers that require .NET at all...Omega drivers + the WDM ATI drivers (about 3-4MB) should be all you need for the features of your AIW...and if you only game with it, then definitely will work with just Omega drivers.

If your software absolutely requires it, and there's no alternative software (ie: I don't have to use Sony Vegas to edit vids, I could use my retail Adobe Premiere which is nothing but a $1500.00 paperweight at this point because it is ultra-complex and I have no clue how to even get started, but I am actually a lot better using Vegas so I have to choose to install .NET), then you got no choice really....other than not using the software that requires it lol.

You can tweak .NET a little though (read tweakguides.com ATI CAT tweak guide)...but prefer to just not use it, or have a second rig that is ONLY for programs that require crap software (like .NET, iTunes, Quicktime, etc all of which I hate badly but must use here and there but damn sure not on my main gaming/power rig)

Anyone know how to unistall .net framecrapwork ? Google finds nothing helpful.

I dont see it in in remove software (showing windows updates) or windows components. I sure I could roll back and restore, but would rather not!

It's next to impossible to remove all of it. Me and hundreds of others found out the hard way. Quickbooks 2005 had a broken install of .NET. Installing on a machine that had no existing install of .NET resulted in no app working that required it. It was a nightmare getting rid of it. Intuit didn't even have an answer, other then blaming Microsoft.

Yeah I just use Omegadrivers. I always hated the CCC clogging up my process list.

I only installed framework in order to install Nlite to make my unnattended setup XP disc then I formatted. I dont use any of the software you said so I'll just keep it off my machine.

Thanks bro

If you don't want .NET framework, Branjo, and the only reason for maybe consider installing it is nLite, then check out nLite's webb-site once more, because it gives you the alternative to simply add some runtime files to your nLite install. It might therefore function correctly as if you had .NET installed. BUT, don't try this if you already have .NET installed.

I don't know why some view it as a resource hog, since it just is an activate service while you're using that specific platform. When it comes to ATI Catalyst Center, alright, then it might be of use to choose Omega alternatives, since you probably don't want to have it running all the time.
