Oc'ing My Athlon Xp 2600

hi everyone, i'm new at this forum and i had a question. My current setup is a athlon xp 2600 oc'ed from 2.08ghz to 2.225ghz

MSI K7n2 delta mobo Nforce 2

512mb DDR 2700 Ram

60gb WD HD 7200 2mb buf

Geforce ti4600 (Asus)

ok, i just changed my stock speed from 166 to 178 mhz and for stock voltage, this is the limit. If i go up more, it locks up on games randomly. So, do i have to up my voltage for the cpu to make this stable? I have more than adequate cooling, (Thermaltake silent boost for socket A) . My questions are do i up the voltage to make it stable? If so, how high can the speed go up? also, i read that you have to change your multiplier with ur fsb for optimal results.... is this true? Also, whats the deal about having the speeds be in sync for optimal performance... ? Like memory and system bus etc...? Any help will be appreciated. thanks again

okay, sorry for the slow response. You have to understand the most people in this forum are sick to death of overclocking quetions since they've all been answered a billion times. Dont sweat it though, welcome to the forums.

Ronin on Voltage: Upping the voltage should make your system more stable at higher clockspeeds, however, you will see a LARGE jump in cpu tempature(could be 5 degrees C) so be very careful when upping the voltage. How much more stabitly you get out of the cpu is almost always diffrent depending on your setup. Just experiment and keep an eye on those temps!

Ronin on FSB and Multipliers: While I havent tested it my self it is widley believed that the higher your FSB the better your performance. So if you have a 5x multiplier at 200mhzFSB, your system speed is 1.0GHZ. If you lowered your multiplier and then raised your fsb, say somthign like 3x333mhz=9.99GHZ, you should see better performance. However, on all AMD and INTEL CPU's the multiplier comes locked. You can unlock the multiplier on AMD chips by modifing the chip(not worth it IMHO) But if you really felt inclinced you could and you'd probably get a little bit better performance.

Im not sure what you're asking about "speeds being insync" so Im not sure how to answer that question.

Hope this helps and happy overclocking.

thanks ronin, that cleared up a few things. My multiplier is at stock, so is my voltage, my cpu is at 178.... so i'm thinking of upping my voltage a bit and thusly increasing the 178 to a 180.... you're basically saying i shuldn't mess with the multiplier because its locked? i read somewehre that nforce2s automaticall unlock em in the bios.. is this true? and is this the most i can push this thing with the current settings? thanks again

Im 99.9% postive that there is no way that the nforce2 chipset unlocks the multiplier. You have to hardmod your cpu in order to unlock it. You can buy unlocking kits but I wouldnt bother. Thats just me though.

Im guessing that your current overclock is the highest you can get the cpu without chaning th voltage. However, you can also overclock your Graphics card and your RAM(you may already be overclocking it)

If your temps are good (like under 38C idle) then you may want to change your voltage. Go slow, only up it one increment at a time(the smallest change possilbe to make) dont OC and check your temps. If they're decent then OC some more.

yeah, i'm not gonna mess with the multiplier then.. i guess untill ig et some nice memory i'll stick to upping the voltage a tad bit. how high of a increment from 178 can i make if i up the voltage a tad bit? Oh yeah my ti4600 is slightly oc'ed and my memory, well i haven't done anything to that, i just loaded the "high performance" defaults that came with my bios . D o you have any advice for memory oc''ing? Thanks again

theres no multi above 12.5 for the 2600+ unless you mod it to default at 13. id say get some good pc3200 ram lower the multi and go for as high a fsb you can get.that 2700 is casaue all the problems over 178 thou a lil more vdimm might get a few more mhz out of it also a lil more voltage on the cpu will help out alot

its unlocked from 5-12.5 multis but your default is 12.5 the highest you can go . your gonna need more vdimm to get the ram past 178 or it could be the cpu needs more voltage

It's my understanding that nForce2 mobo's unlock Athlon CPU's, but in order to get any higher than a 12.5 multi you have to do a hardware mod (to 13-17x I think?), in which case you can't go any lower than 13. Appologies if this is wrong, i'm sorta new to all of this as well.

Hi all

I had a A7N8X non dl all i did was change my bios over to the UBER 1004 then all the multipliers worked this image is with the asus motherboard CORRECT me if im wrong i have had a few different motherboards since then.
