Nightwish68 Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 My favorites are Samsung and Hitachi.
Sorrento Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 All the brands have died on me, except Western Digital... so far this brand has been flawless. I have a 4 year old 40 gb WD PATA hdd working right now, and the thing doesn't show signs that is going to quit.
Cuttlefish1212 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I would have said Samsung a couple of years ago, but their customer support absolutely sucks in my opinion. You can't beat WD...they've been making hard drives since CP/M so they know what they're doing
ilikeducttape Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 my 4 year old WDs still run like the day i bought them, quiet and solid. my maxor just crapped out on me though after only 10 months of usage. i think im gonna try my luck with one of the new seagates w/ perp. recording. omarwashington Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Was wanting a WD but I got a seagate for free. We'll "sea" how things go. Seagate always reminds me of that show Seaquest.

MACarter02 Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 Like many have said, all drives fail. I buy whatever has the best warranty and is the cheapest. TO this point, it's maxtor
Guest YuKoN Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 Of course I'd love a pair of Raptors. Bit rich for my blood tho- I used to swear by Maxtor. But on my last build I got a great deal on my Seagate. Having used both, I've found the Seagate to be much quieter- in fact my pair of Cuda's running in raid 0 are quieter than any single Maxtor I've ever owned. I'm not saying the Maxtors aren't on par with any other drive of the same speed/cache- most mfgs are very close performance wise. So Seagate is my choice, until such time as I can afford the 10k drives-
Guest erico Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 They are rock solid. Western Digital not so. I have had to RMA WD HDDs before.
CharmedLover84 Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 I can't actually say I have an overall favorite. I have a Seagate (120GB in my old Compaq 8000T) that's still going strong, I have a Maxtor that's likewise still going strong, and I have a few WDs that are great, as well as a Samsung. As far as performance goes, WD wins because of their Raptors. As far as value goes, I ahve to say I am very pleased with what Seagate has to offer, they have a good warranty, they are pretty cheap and don't seem to have too awefully many problems. Could be wrong about that though, haven't researched it much.
red930 Posted November 23, 2006 Posted November 23, 2006 Seagates have been running quieter, cooler & longer than anything else. They all have a 5yr warranty & with their new "Perpendicular Recording" they kill all other 7200RPM HDD's & even give the 10,000RPM Raptors a run for their money. Have you used any of these drives with Perpendicular Recording? and if so did you see any improvement in seak time or any thing at all?
