Guest Tae Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Just purchased and put together the PC in my sig and had a problem booting up for the first time. Last night I got yellow lights on the motherboard, hit power on, heard a noise like it was trying to poweron...nothing. So I went to bed because it was late. Today I check the power connections (all four) and notice that the 12v is in backwards. So I switch it and here noise see red diagnotics flash on both the motherboard and my video card...then nothing. I do what Seasonic recommends and shutdown and restart the PSU a few times. See the red led's flash a couple times, but still no power on. I move the one stick of memory I am using from a yellow slot to a orange slot. Nothing. I unplug all and replug them in. Power on, red lights flash and then nothing. But this time I notice the yellow light by the 12 volt plug and memory going off a few seconds after I turn the power supply on. Just before I am about to give up I unplug and replug again, making sure everything thing is solidly plugged in. That is when it happens, smoke and sizzle right around the 12v plug. Fans started to work, but motherboard started frying. Unplugged and lowered my head. So. Bad motherboard? Bad PSU? Could I have fried my Memory and CPU? This sucks, never happened to me before. Do I try to RMA the board back to Newegg? Or go to DFI?
lowboy Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I would try newegg faster and dfi doesn't warranty user error. This build guide may help:http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showpost.p...04&postcount=
Guest Tae Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 So you think plugging in the 12v backwards in the first place is what caused this?
SeanDude05 Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Have you tried to clear the CMOS? Just an idea... And plugging it in backwards would have fed 12v to the 5v
tasr Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Go back to this setup guide. NF4 LanParty - initial build w/pictures. Remove your motherboard completely from the case and place it on a non-conductive surface. Then build the rig with a minimal build of 1 HDD, 1 video card, 1 memory module in the orange slot closet to the edge and PS/2 keyboard. Clear the CMOS like this link. Follow it exactly. lowboy Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Anytime you miss wire electronics you usally fry something. You can test psu and other components as no telling what you fried.

That is what I followed, accept I did not hook up a hard drive. I hooked of a DVD drive instead in anticipation of flashing the bios before installing and setting other stuff up. Funning it says about two of the plugs that they can only go in one way. The 12v apparently can go in backwards fine.
Guest Tae Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I know a couple of you suggest I clear CMOS, which seems kind of a canned response since I never even posted once and changed anything. Plus since I saw smoke, I am thinking I don't want to turn anything on again.
SeanDude05 Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Good call. I'd remove all hardware and take it down to a computer shop to have them test it all to see if you fried your RAM or CPU or anything.
lowboy Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I would test all components. The only connector that I've seen people reverse is the fdd connector.
Guest Tae Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I am going to test the ram in my current rig, it cam from out it anyway. The CPU, well when I pull it out, if there are any burn marks I will RMA too I guess, else wait till I get new board and test. I don't really know of any local shop that will test the CPU, I guess I could call around. Edit: thanks for the help. I feel pretty stupid right now, I just didn't even now this was possible. I have heard of people frying stuff, but never happened to me. I am not expert, but I have put together a few PC's in my time and this is the first time I apparently ruined something. I guess I will go back to work now.
