red930 Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Happy Administrator's Day to Tasr & ReelFiles for being so kind on stopping by here and wishing everyone else the same. Note: So the page they'd try to load was from a DataBase? Hmm....Server off? Spyware? Overheating? hehe...
ReelFiles Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 My problem was that he moved his desk onto his network cable. The desks at his office desks have steel legs with a plastic base, but the plastic cap wore through and cut the cat5 almost in half. I am just happy, I didn't have to drive in for that crap. Yep, lot of kicking off power strips and pulling CAT5 out here too. You’ll get a laugh out of this and is one of the funniest TT I’ve seen; A project manager needed some software installed. A desktop support person went down installed it and was good to go. The PM calls the help desk later that day and request that her chair be re-adjusted to her specifications. Apparently the desktop support person raised the chair height when installing the software. I’m one of the server admins, we back up the helpdesk and desktop support so we see all the call. We laughed are asses off that day.………
red930 Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 One of my Buddies is the department head of a financial institution. A few years back, he was complaining that he had to work one Saturday a quarter to verify that the backups were functioning properly. Now this is a guy that makes $250K a year complaining about one Saturday a quarter. His office hours are 9 to 5 weekdays period. Nothing after hours at all. At the time I was in the casino business. Casinos never close unless a disaster happens like Katrina or the New Jersey State Legislature! LOL There is no down time, gaming regulators are always on property, a casino handles as much cash in a day as a bank does in a week and everyone is trying to get an edge on the house. The constant up-time was one of the reasons I left the casino industry. I was given 2 hours twice a year to perform system maintenance. That's one quarter of a day out of 365(366 on Leap years). I'll do the math for you. 8,760 hours in a year with four hours of down time equals 0.045 percent down time. Or for a more positive representation, I maintained a 99.99955% uptime. I went to lunch one day and never returned(I call it the black-hole of lunch maneuver). Needless to say, I wasn't moved by his whining about one Saturday a quarter. So here's to all you sysadmins that have to put up with other peoples crap. Salute!
