Danuel Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 found a super killer deal on a x2 3800 64 AMD on newegg, enough change that i could afford, so i went ahead and grabbed one, just wondering if i am going to have to do any major configuration when i install it, or will it be as easy as pop it in and go, should i update to the most recent bios before or after i install the cpu or do i need the newest bios at all for this upgrade? will windows bug out and make me re installl or will it auto recognize dual core and be ready to go? CPDMF Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 As long as you have the 6/23 bios or later then there is no need for an update. Plan on a reinstall of Windows. Grab the MS hotfix and the AMD dual core optimiser while your at it. You might be able to get away with just uninstalling the CPU drivers from device manager but it's just better to have a clean install for a change that major. Danuel Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I have the bios version 04/06/2006 the 06/23 looks like it dates back to 2005, so i will be okay with what i have now. taking that the bios upgrades are cumlative of previous bios upgrades what it says @ post. so i take it i need to upgrade. and where do i get this hotfix at i can find the optimizer but not the hotfix. Can anyone clear that up for me that may know what he is referring to? Basically im thinking this way, take out old cpu, install new cpu, boot to post and check bios to insure cpu is a-ok. Then restart and boot from XP install CD and install.
Kuga Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Im not understanding or sure about the CPU-Delete part of his post. Can anyone clear that up for me that may know what he is referring to? Basically im thinking this way, take out old cpu, install new cpu, boot to post and check bios to insure cpu is a-ok. Then restart and boot from XP install CD and install. I believe they meant go into System from control panel, then Device Manager under the Hardware Tab and uninstalling the processor. I may be wrong on that one, someone please confirm/deny. I actually upgraded my cpu yesterday and what I did was cleared the BIOS using the recommended bios resetting method, removed the old cpu, put in the new cpu and put the BIOS to optimized settings on first boot then rebooted to windows and started to run prime. I didn't spend time OCing it yet but I wanted to check temps during prime for the first 12 hours to make sure I put the AS5 on correctly. I did not re-install windows since I only changed the processor. You can reinstall if you want, but I personally haven't had issues when I only changed the processor. Danuel Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Awesome, good info Kuga thx. Will a Clear CMOS be needed for this upgrade?
