Help O/C AMD Athlon 3800+

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, i have been O/C for a while, but i never had a MB this sophisticated, and never really got more than a 11% O/C before stability issues happen.

I read the DFI guide to AMD overclocking, following the steps...set my RAM ratio to 1/1, LDT/FSB ratio to 3, etc etc. I have my CPU Voltage set at 1.73, chipset voltage at 1.75, and RAM voltage at 2.69

I cannot seem to get more than 2.7ghz out of this CPU. I tried messin with the FSB and CPU multipliers... anytime i hit 2.71GHZ my stability issues start with my video game (City of Villans) locking up... i mean the whole system freezes up, so i know its a hardware lockup. Right now my multiplier is at 12x, FSB at 225 = 2.70ghz. If i hit 227FSB i get lockups in video game...230FSB and i cannot even run 3dMark 2005 without a lockup.

Im wondering did i hit, or is this the max this CPU can be overclocked? 13% is best i ever done, but i see u guys up there at 3GHZ. So what can i possibly be doing or not doing?

I appreciate any input here, thx guys

did u really follow the oc guide to find ur cpu max?? ;)

maybe u should try a memory divider first to rule out the ram.

and 1,73V-CORE is way too much juice IMHO

For a start, drop your vcore immediately, or you will fry that chip.

The maximum you should be using for a Venice on air is 1.60-1.65v, and maybe 1.7v on water. You will break your chip soon if you do not.

He may well have followed the guide properly, as he won't need to set a ram divider till he passes 250 htt, which is unlikely on a 12x multiplier.

Try playing about with 10x and 11x multipliers too, but remember to put a divider on your ram when doing this, as the htt you will use will be much higher so your ram cannot run 1/1.

Also, high chipset voltages may not work best for you. For many people it doesn't affect stability at all, although some people claim it does. Play around with those as well.

What BIOS are you using? Make sure you grab a good one.

Also check that you have all the chipset driver updates, etc.

I have never seen a Venice chip hit 3ghz, the best ones usually do 2.7-2.8ghz, independant of whether it was a 3000+ or a 3800+, so it may well be your limit.

The only chips I have seen do 3ghz are opterons and San Diegos, which are a different kettle of fish.

thx for the replies... ambient temp under normal load, bout 35C, full out gaming 42-45C.

I found with lower voltages, like in the 1.65 range i was not stable at 225FSB/2.7ghz. U think i should try again with those lower voltages?

Also, i thought going into the GENIE BIOS and making ur ram divider 1/1 was messing with the RAM divider. That should make the RAM run at 100DDR... that is what the DFI AMD guide said to do..am i making the right adjustment to rule out the RAM as a bottleneck?
