SeanDude05 Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I bet you have an unlimited data plan right? Does it affect your airtime usage/data usage fees?
red930 Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 May have to pick your brain. They're about to roll out the EVDO service down here since everything had to be replaced after Katrina. The last of the temporary towers came down a few weeks ago so it shouldn't be long. Should be interesting since all the tech firms are competing to deliver the latest and greatest wireless tech. ReelFiles Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 You should have kept that last part to your self, dude. Bragging about illegal activities is frowned upon here.

ReelFiles Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Thank you sir, You know, since I saw James Bond use his cell to uplink to the net, years ago, I've been waiting for a viable wireless solution. It seems that while we can get satellite radio to work "flawless", cellphones still have trouble getting a consistent signal, around here anyways. I also figured that, by now, unlimited calling plans would be as common as unlimited VOIP is today. What is keeping cellphone carriers from offering unlimited plans for a decent price? I figure that $50 a month per customer should be more than enough to cover the costs. ExRoadie, you're always the man with the info, what's the inside scoop? centy Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I think it is because they have to pay for the rental of the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and also for the radio transmitters etc. Vodafone one of the biggest providers in the UK are in massive debt, they have great coverage though. And a 3G liscence lol.
red930 Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 ExRoadie, you're always the man with the info, what's the inside scoop? Well, during Katrina, we went from the Jetsons to the Flintstones in about three hours. While the bulk of services were up and running within weeks, all of that work was just a stop-gap measure. Now that we're 11 months out from the storm, we're starting to get newer services implemented. The main fiber backbone was simply laid down on the ground right after the storm. Now they're almost done getting a permanent backbone in place along the railroad tracks(the RR tracks are perceived as the limit of destruction for the most part along the front beach). The tech firms are now replacing the old and tired tech with the latest and greatest tech in an orderly fashion. Verizon was the first to implement their high-speed wireless(144kbps) about a month after the storm. The last temp towers have just come down but it seems they've concentrated their efforts in New Orleans up until this point. I'm as excited as anyone else about this because it will allow my customers another form of access as backup to Cablemodem and DSL. In some of the outlying areas, I still have customers on satellite Internet. Ping times in the multi-second range and it goes down every time it rains. SLOW is all I have to say about that. ReelFiles Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Thanks, it seems that at least something good came out of that tragedy. I wish NY could just tear down all this crap and start from scratch. I mean it looks horrible around here, utility poles are way overloaded and the wiring just sucks. I miss all the underground wiring I was used to in Germany, looks so much neater.
