red930 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I had a pot of potatoes boiling on the stove to make a good potatoe salad to go along with the chicken that was on the grill. The potatoes finished boiling so I brought out the strainer, stuck it into the sink and turned on the cold water. I reached over to remove the pot from the stove and just as it was right over the edge of the sink, one of the handles broke splashing hot water all over my left hand. I have never been burned before and I hope I never get burned again. It freakin' hurt. The saving grace to my predicament was having the cold water already running which I immediately stuck my hand under. It stung at first but the cold water took affect and soothed the burn. For much of the weekend, I had it lightly wrapped in gauze. It was quite difficult playing my favorite games but I managed. Anyone else here get burned by hot water? Anospa Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Not that fun to have happen. Worst burn I've gotten was from the sun: sun poisoning. Boils, fever, nasuea, the whole deal. Top of my shoulders/upper back and some of my biceps. Quite possibly the worst/most aggravating physical pain I've dealt with. You know when you get wet and look down at your arm and you got all those dribbles of water on it? Ya, thats what my left shoulder/arm looked like. Right shoulder had a huge boil 'bout the size of a kiwi fruit. Heh, when that thing popped it actually woke me up. To add to it all, I was on a cruise two days after getting scorched. Normally, I'm absolutely fine with boats, love the ocean and hope to work on a boat someday. With feeling so sick and stuff, got sea sick first night. Was peeling for about 2 weeks, and looking back, I suspect that I had second degree burns. Nowadays, I definitly remember to put sunscreen on, a lot! Learned my lesson that Irish guys don't tan, I get more freckles, or pretty much die.
smolt Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 when I was 12 we lived in a ranch house. the house was heated by hot water. copper pipes under the floor. boiler in the gouge. the boiler broke down. And mom always made me take a bath before bed time. Was heating water on the stove. in 2 1/2 gal galvanise bucket swivel Handel . I made four trips to the bath tub and on the fifth trip I grab the handle and took off it hung up on the stove. pored the boiling water right into my Boot. filled it up. I set the bucket down so not to spell any more. they pulled my boot off gave me two aspirins and sent me to bed. When i wake my foot was bigger then my head. I was out of school for 8 months

PhoetuS Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Well i have never been burned that badly with water, some minor spashes (compared to your story) from boiling water a few times. Though, every summer I get burned a few times from being around bonfires & campfires. I get flash burns all the time from being very close to the fires. Often the flash burns are pretty minor first degree burns, sometime redness that lasts for a day or so or sometimes only an hour or two. I have a number of scars from coals falling on my shoulders, chest & back & sticking for a few seconds. Usually hurts at first, but if they stick long enough they eventually go numb. Had a few pretty good second degree burns like that - dime & nickel size blisters, & i don't even know how many smaller (2-5mm) burns i've had - they happen pretty frequently. As i a matter of fact i have 2 on my arm right now, approx 3mm, that are about a week old. A coal jumped out of a fire and stuck to my arm, i brushed it away & thought i got it off my arm, but it was stuck. A few seconds later i noticed it was still stuck to my arm so i got it off. It was probably stuck to my arm for 5 seconds, glowing red the whole time. My burns are pretty minor compared to some of my friends. One friend stood in a campfire long enough to get second & third degree burns on his feet, & half way up his calves. Another went face first into a bed of coals & got some pretty significant burns on his face. Yet another went hands first into a bed of coals, though his wife made some amazing burn cream that allowed him to heal his hand with virtually no scaring. The worst Sunburn i have ever experienced (and if you want lots of fun, get sunburned then stand next to a fire) was in Cocoa Beach Florida. I was there to compete in the Junior Olympics (Tae Kwon Do) when i was seventeen. My family decided to make a vacation of it so we went down and stayed for a week. The day before the tournament, a 2 day event, i decided to go for a walk on the beach, which i had done everyday. Except this day i forgot to put on sunscreen and walked a couple miles mid day.... Wow was that stupid. That evening i had blisters all over my back & shoulders... i could hardly sleep, sit or do anything & the thought of wearing a shirt was painful. The icing on the cake was that i had to wear my Gi (heavy canvas Karate Uniform) for 8 HOURS the next day, & then 8 HOURS the day after that... It was terrible, i don't know how long it took, but when i removed my Gi, all the blisters had been torn open.... Through all the agonizing i still managed to return home with a couple gold medals (and a broken nose - the 3rd or 4th break i think)
neogenesis2004 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Wow, you've never been burnt before that? Thats amazing! I used to be a cook at a seafood resturaunt from age 15-17 and I've gotten every burn in the book. Boiling water burn on my leg from *gasp* boiling potatoes, 3rd degree burn from from someone handing me an empty pot that was sitting over and open flame and the idiot not telling me it was a hot pan. The worst ever was when I was putting a new bag of fries in the fryer and the prep had apparently gotten it from the back of the freezer. There ended up being alot of ice in the bottom of the bag and OH MAN if you evr put ice in a fryer you will see fireworks. So long story short 400 degree oil landed on my arms, face, neck.....everywhere I didnt have clothing covering. Luckily though the only real scars I have are from when I played around with fireworks when I was a kid, LOL. After leaving that job I vowed to never work at a resturaunt again....I'd rather starve 'Punnnnnnnnnnn'

Anospa Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Heh, forgot about the time few weeks ago my friend stupidly threw rubbing alcohol onto a bonfire, some splashed out and onto my leg. Smacked it out before I even realized what happened. It was wicked funny, but pretty glad it wasn't worse.
red930 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Wow, you've never been burnt before that? Thats amazing! I learned at a very young age (mainly watching other family members make careless mistakes and seeing the results of those errors in judgement) that all possible sources of fire or heat must be treated with caution. In fact, the only times that I have ever been close to being burned have been the times 117v or 220v AC go up each arm. None of those instances left any marks whatsoever. red930 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 One of my most interesting burns was from GMAW (gas metal arc welding aka MIG). One of the sparks shot at my shirt (long sleeve, which was good), bounced and got stuck underneath my welding glove (which was bad). I ripped the glove off and hopped up and down for about 5 minutes. No big damage, however. I've also had similar burns from holes in the welding gloves (from people who like to use them with the belt sanders). After welding 3/8" plate steel it gets really friggen hot. You learn to check all of the gloves for holes :-P
ReelFiles Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 My brother pulled an entire pot of boiling water off the stove and got so badly burned his whole chest and belly is one huge scar, 20something years later. He tells people he got attacked by a tiger at the circus when he was little, just to mess with them, hehe. My step-parents had one of those glass-top stoves that you can't tell if it's on without looking at these tiny lights, well I leaned my hand on it when I was drunk and burned my whole palm, because I was drunk I didn't realize immediately and ripped all the skin off my palm when I went to pull away. It took almost 3 months to completely heal.
Angry_Games Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 It was quite difficult playing my favorite games but I managed. lol well at least your keyboard won't need washing for a few more days then so the lesson here is "don't fool with boiling hot stuff" just like this lesson: "don't kick things harder than your toes"
