silon Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 hello everyone, im concerned about the bending of my graphics card [7600GT] it has been bending ever since i fitted my vf700 on it and i think it think it is continuing to bend. my previous card [6800GT] died due to -i suspect- bending. the system would not load and so on, so i reinstalled the stock cooler which had many many screw holes and the problem was gone. i *think* the stock cooler was designed in such a way that the HS actually keeps the card from bending. [i still cant load a 3D app even with the stock HS] anyway, im worried about the same thing happening to my 7600GT. im suprised it still bends even though a metal backbone came with it. what do you guys think? do heavy VGA coolers that bend cards have the potential to kill them or was the death of my previous card just a coincidence? [and i shouldnt worry about the bending] thanks
Anospa Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I remember someone talking about this or something similar in a thread about a week ago. They had a metal bar that ran from a hole in the corner of the card down to the bottom of the case, basically a support for the back corner of the card that was furthest from the motherboard. That might help out if you can't do anything else. I have a GeForce2 in an old PC that is coming apart where the PCB meets the metal bracket for the back of the case, don't think its a weight issue or anything, just a really old card. mrzeld Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 i have never heard of anyone having this problem. and have never experienced it myself. if anything, it is a problem with the ages old ATX specification. it wasn't really designed i guess with heavy GPU HSFs and a tower case in mind (it probably wouldn't be an issue if we all still used desktop layouts). if you think your having that much of a problem, whip out some fishing line and give the card some support. n1ce_hat Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 i like the fishing line idea.. so long as stray wire doesnt catch in the many system fans.. heh
SanguineI Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 The zf900s are really light so thankfully this is no longer a problem for me. I do have sort of a problem in that thermaltake put a stupid tool-less expansion bay thing on my case that pretty much gets in the way of my video card. The metal bar that runs on the side of my video card blocks the plastic retainer thing from fully closing, and theres no room for a screw, so my video card is only supported by being fully inserted and I shifted the expansion bay cover below it up a little bit to make sure it doesn't start bending down. Fishing line is a brilliant idea though. I wish I would have thought of that back when I had a heavier cooler.
ReelFiles Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 IMO fishing line is a dumb idea, and will eventually cause problems, next you're gonna use a stick to prop up the card. Just get a lighter cooler if you're that concerned about it. Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh.
