Guest oRiOn Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Hey guys need a little bit of help for a buddy of mine. Right now he is using a Compaq computer that only has 256mb ram and onboard gfx (just enough for him to play CS like 10 minutes everyday). He wants to start playing some more games now that he has more time in the summer, like BF2, FEAR, yada yada. He has roughly 300 dollars to spend. This would be great to get a 7900GT but he also needs some ram and I can't choose what card to go for. I would like to prefer nVidia because in my past experience in using them in many friends and clients machines they seem to be the most error free/user friendly with drivers. thanks for the help, -Will oh just some clarification he does have a PCI-E slot I went over and checked
Sorrento Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 There is a problem: the Compaq was assembled with the original hardware in mind. You will have to change the power supply when you upgrade to the new video card probably or suffer problems around it. Depending on what motherboard and processor it has the RAM it uses probably is CL2.5, I had problems upgrading RAM on a Compaq before because it didn't like CL2 RAM. This is an important issue as well. BF2 requires a ton of RAM... the higher quality settings you use, the higher the RAM requirement it gets. At maximum quality settings the RAM usage can be higher than 1 gb, so if your machine only has 1 gb it will stutter from time to time because of HDD paging file access. Coors Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 7600 gt would do pretty good. When I was just using one I could play Obivion, COD2, and Farcry at mid to high settings very well.
Guest oRiOn Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Ok i was looking at the 7600gt and a gig of some cheapo ram that will JUST work, not overclock since it is his rig and he doesn't overclock. I know about BF2 taking up more ram roughly 1.2gigs with everything on the highest settings so I am shooting for 1.5gigs in his system. With a 7600GT 1.5gigs of ram and a 3.2ghz intel proc, I think he will be running BF2 and Fear pretty well. -Will
Sorrento Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Yeah it will... just make sure the PSU is up to the challenge, any problems you might encounter would probably come from there.
