J-Teck Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Hi All, I’m new to this forum and it is a great source of information that I’ve used to build my rig based on recommendations. I've switch from Intel/ASUS to AMD/DFI and very pleased with my new systems performance. I have a couple of questions I haven’t found yet using the boards search engine and maybe someone can point me in the right direction The XFX GeForce 7950 GX2 M520 according to specifications states a Clock rate 520 MHz which according to PowerStrip is correct but the Memory Clock of 1.3 GHz per XFX specs versus PowerStrip's reading of 650 MHz. Is this right or am I missing something here? And last question, how can I determine if my CPU is lapped? Other than that this thing is a speed demon and rocks. Just for kicks I replayed Doom 3 and what a difference, can’t believe what I’ve been missing. Thanks all
red930 Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Memory is calculated times 2, so you have 650MHz x 2 = 1.3GHz. I don't think you look at the Processor for lapping, but usually users try lapping their HSF. Note: If you still are lost and not sure what to do, try looking at this article... http://www.amdpower.com/sections.php4?op=v...ticle&artid=

Lapping refers to achieving a almost mirror finish on the hsf to achieve optimal heat transfer. There are some 3rd part hsf's that come close to a mirror finish, but 99% of them fall short edit: doh, guess i'm getting slow in my old age of 22yrs

Note: I think he's talking about his Processor being lapped and not his HSF. Very odd don't you think, usually people take off the IHS and never think about lapping it, right? J-Teck Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Thanks Guys, Well now I understand the video clock speed. As far as the lapping of the CPU I read somewhere or maybe I just misinterpreted the article, it was something to do with the ability to keep a processor from being overclocked, which I don’t plan on doing anytime soon but was a bit curious about this lapping thing. red930 Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Lapping the processor's IHS or the HSF would make a mirrior look and would transfer heat so much better than stock. Plus using the right thermal paste usually helps slightly bit. @sdy284 That link is a pron site, son! I have told you many many times to get a gf and stop spending all night in your room looking at those sites, SON!
