politbureau Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Honestly, upgrading to agp/754 board is going to be a temp fix. When your x850xt is the bottle neck or you have the itch for a CPU upgrade you will have to jump pci-e.Ditto the wang-man
red930 Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Let's say you get an AGP Video card (or you already have one) so you use this new motherboard you get until the AGP platform dies, now what? Get a new motherboard that supports PCI-E ($80-$100) and a PCI-E video card (price will vary). I have your solution... http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2524 ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 AGP 8X PCI-E 16X SATA1.5Gb/SATA3.0Gb

scubadude Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Well, now I have a lot to think about. My x800xt graphics card still plays well and it's only about 8 months old. If I went pcie I would have had to change out my mobo and processor and my heat sink also. My wife woulda killed me! I thought about the uli card, but it doesn't seem to perform well. I guess I'd like to go 939, because at least that way I won't be at a dead end. But I have never bought unsupported legacy hardware. I do try to be a generation or so back to save money and overclock to make up the difference. There are 2 x2 processors at newegg for $199. The Windsor and the Manchester. Which one is better? Would either work in the Ultra-D? Will my older 2-2-2-5 bh5 memory work with the ultra-D? Thanks, Ron
Capt Proton Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Scubadude I hear your pain. A transition to 939 and PCIe all at the same time can be pricey, and forces one to leave behind a piece of favorite hardware. I know, I wanted to keep my NEWARK, so I got this Infinity board. Bad move. The Infinity is such a pig after the NF3 250GB. Throw into the mix the transition to DDR2 that's happening, and it raises even further issues as to what the future holds. What you should get als depends on what you do. If not multi tasking, a X2 core isn't worth it. A $150 3800+ Venice outperforms a $240 4200+ X2 in most things (Cdn Dollars). 939 versus 754? Yeah, getting a 754 CPU could be a challange, except for Sempron. However, you stated you like overclocking. Semprons can really fly. You have to look at what it is you do and decide from there what technology best suits your needs. Then think about your upgrade plan. How soon you think you will want to upgrade again may help with price point decisions. Good Luck.

scubadude Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 There only is one choice------"DFI Lanparty NF3 250Gb"-------- You wont regret it. Have you ever played far cry with it? HOw's it do? Battlefield 2 I'm looking for that board. Thanks Ron:)
Barney Fife Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I played Q4, COD2, FEAR, Farcry, HL2 and Painkiller, all on medium-high settings, at 1024x768, They all played flawlessly. I even played high-ultra high settings on those better engine games like HL2, COD2 and Painkiller. I love this board so much that my very first DFI-Street post was a thread fully dedicated to NF3 250GB. http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51847 This is the Best MB I have ever bought (My first) in my life. So happy with it, I like to kick DFI and DFI-Street Staff in the balls, so to let them know the opposite of how I feel.
G-Code Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Get a 939 board. Gives you more CPU options especially dual core. I am happy with my Ultra-D, have not had even one problem. Bruce
