Help me pick an AGP mobo.

Recommended Posts

I'm in a bit of a bind. I purchased an ati x800 xt agp graphics card so I wouldn't have to rebuild my entire system to go pci express. Now I realise that my nf2 mobo is holding my graphics card back (farcry, bf2). I want to upgrade from my nf2 mobo but I'm not quite sure what to get.

A skt939 ultra d seems to be the best but I can't find anyone who has them. Is there any other option? What would be a good mobo/cpu combo. I'm doing this an a budget so....

Thanks,

Ron

yeah if staying AGP nf3 250 is the only board left in dfi but there going to be hard to find too

...where you could buy an A64 (754) 3200 CPU and get a DFI NF3 AGP board for free for about 100 US dollars.

Check it out under clearance... I think there is a thread in recommendations here at the street on it too.

I bought one of those 100 dollar combos for my nephew for a box to build for him for Christmas.

A LOT of bang for the buck.

PS you could get 2 other boards for free too, but who wants an ASROCK or crappy model ASUS when you can get a DFI?

Well if you wanted a 939 cpu...get a Asus A8V....it's a via chipset..but at 60.00 it a agp/939 board and overclock fairly decent... couple that with a 3800-x2 (167.00) you got a cheap system...and dual channel at that....NF3 is single channel on the ram...

Or if you have to have a DFI...get a NF3-Ultra-D...here... http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60793

Honestly, upgrading to agp/754 board is going to be a temp fix. When your x800xt is the bottle neck or you have the itch for a CPU upgrade you will have to jump pci-e.

Think about selling most of your hardware and look into a NF4-Ultra_D, X2 3800 look into some cards. The X2 have dropped in price and there are alot of 6800,7800GT's, X800, x850 floating around.

Or find a NF3-D :)

I hate to kill the vibe, but I'd get a 939 based mobo, not a 754.

939 will allow you to go Dual Core in the future if you want and price allows, and then transition that CPU to a PCI-Express system. The whole predicament you're in now came as a result of buying unsupported legacy hardware - so don't fall into the same trap again!

Plus there are very few 754 CPUs currently still available through regular retail channels, and lots of 939s, which are going down in price all the time. Most of the 754 chips are Semprons and Mobile versions, which are either slower or much more expensive.

Newegg has 17 S754 chips to 27 S939s, most of which are Semprons, Mobiles or Turions. You can get an X2 4200+ 939 for $199 right now.

Your two best choices for 939 + AGP are:

- DFI Ultra-D

- MSI K8N Neo2

Although I'm obviously partial to the MSI (lol), I think this is the better choice simply because it is cheaper - you can get one on Ebay or in the For Sale Section for about $50 bucks shipped, which is far less than the Ultra-D or 250GB S754 boards are going for. Plus you can use the money you saved to buy a dual core cpu which will outperform most 754 chips out there by a fair margin.

Peace
