Recommended Posts

so i realize what the System Managment Bus does but i am unsure if i actually need to install the drivers in the forceware 6.70 package.

will i lose any needed functions or stability by skipping it?

Well, SeanDude05 is mostly correct.

There is no Northbridge/Southbridge in AMD land since in Intel speak, the "Northbridge" is the memory controller and the memory controller is included in the AMD CPU.

AMD uses a "Southbridge" only peripheral controller setup which is why we refer to it as the "chipset".

The newer motherboards are including multiple controller chips for dual X16 lane bandwidth but there really is nothing different about the setup other than there are multiple chipset chips on the board.

BTW The terms Northbridge and Southbridge we coined due to their location on the motherboard. The Northbridge memory controller was close to the CPU and RAM while the Southbrigde peripheral controller was further down on the board. Hence the terms North and South.
