Jammed in power connector cause damage?

Recommended Posts

I think the cause for my pc not powering on at all was because i left one of the power connectors(the one with 4 straight pins) only plugged in on 3 and jammed in, i dont really remember if i did , but after i tried powering on i smelled smoke and my pc wont power on at all. I also pulled out my cpu and found that a few pins were twisted.. so wandering mostly if the power connector could of damaged everything or if it could just be because i moved the heatsink a little and it twisted pins?

Smoke smell is extremely bad. If it was in fact plugged in wrong it would have quite immediately short circuited. If that happened and you smelled smoke and now you're not getting power chances are good you're going to be replacing something.

I don't think you can use a 4pin plug on a 3pin connector. Might need to RMA your motherboard if it's still possible. I think you may be able to fix your processor by trying very very carefully bending your pins back to the original. Look at your processor pins at every corner and when you think you got them right be very gentle when you put the processor back into the socket. Next time make sure you run your system for about 5-10mins to heat up the thermal paste between the HSF and IHS before trying to rip the damn thing out.

well in trieng to bend one of the pins back, one broke off so there goes my opty.

Also i thought i smelled smoke from my harddrive.. how strong are harddrives from burning up like this ? Im hoping it didnt burn as i had information on it that i can never recover and is really important !!! Also if it short circuited could it have burned the rest of my hardware attached to my mobo ?

I've heard someone still using an AMD processor after breaking a pin or two, but that's just crazy i think. I really don't know what to say but i wish you luck with whatever you need to do to get your moneys worth. :)

Note:The pins being bent, i've actually had that happen to me once with my AMD64 3000+ Venice core and i have carefully bent them back but maybe they weren't as badly bent as yours. Sorry dude...i tried...

I had a bunch of bent pins on my FX-57 when my XP-120 decided to "pop" right off while I was reinstalling the ram, pulling my cpu out with it while the lever was still down. I just about had a heartattack, I dont think I've panicked that hard since high school finals back when. I was able to bend them back into place very carefully. Be very careful! those pins can snap right off at any moment

if everything except my processor is connected to my motherboard should it still be able to turn on fans and show debug lights if i hit the power ?

What if the pins on my processor are twisted while its locked in the plate and i hit the power would it still show debug lights and turn on fans or still not react to me hitting the power ?

As i have no one to test other parts with im trieng to find out what i need to order, and if i should just get a processor first to try it or if its probably more serious than just that.

If possible, include the RMA invoice showing that you recieved that board. RMA Dept. should have given you an RMA number, write that on the invoice or somewhere it is easy to see inside the box, then also write the RMA number on the outside of the box. Address is correctly, and you should be good to go.
