[ULTRA-D] SATA 2 HDD brought me problems!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

I have the system described below and, before buying the WD 250Gb HDD I used a Samsung IDE 80Gb without any problem.

Well, just after installing that SATA HDD, issues began to happen here. To sum up, the fact is that sometimes the SATA HDD is detected during post, sometimes not, or, when detected properly, sometimes system freezes during WIN XP loading screen.

The rig is exactly the same, except for the new HDD, which is plugged to the SATA Port #1 and is fed through its Sata power connector. I'm using an adapter to convert the 4-pin molex into sata power plug. The DVD drive is connected to the IDE 1.

The question is that I don't really know why these issues began to happen randomly. I have tried to change the sata cable with no results. The 4-pin connected to the adapter is exactly the same that fed the previous IDE HDD. Does anyone know if there's any compatibility problem between Ultra-D and some SATA HDD's?

My PSU specs are these:

As I can't figure out what to do, I'd really appreciate if you could help me.

Thx!!!

Have same problem as u have 1 IDE 1 SATA

Try to update BIOS as i do

Hum... I already have the latest bios installed.

Does anyone know if that is a problem with the mobo or WD HDD's specifically? I mean, if it's a mobo issue, I'll probably look for peace and buy one from another brand. DFI Ultra-D is a bit tiring to cope with.

Pls, I'll appreciate some help!!!

Is your SATA hard drive set as the first boot device in BIOS? If not, reorder your boot drive like this;

first boot device - hard drive

second boot device - disable

third boot device - disable

Test in this configuration and see if the random disappearing act or hanging problems disappear.

Do you have any USB devices connected to your PC during boot? If so, again for testing purposes please disconnect.

Last but not least visit the WD website and see if there is an updated firmware for your drive. If so give it a try.

1st, adapters wouldn't play a role.

2nd Some SATA drives have issues, but they have firmware fixes most of the time.

3rd, what are the actual voltages from your PSU?

4th, did you try the diagnostic software that came with the HD?

Right now, I have both IDE & SATA devices, and they are detected just fine with the latest BIOS. I also have enabled SMART for all devices.

If the above suggestions still leave you with the same issues, you should download WD disk tools and run a disk health check and determine whether or not you might have just got a faulty drive.

I have reordered the boot sequence... will test for some time to see if it solves the problem. Towards USB devices, I have keyboard, mouse, printer, webcam and joypad RF plugged. I don't really think that is the cause of the issues... when I install the OS from the very beggining, I always unplug all the stuffs apart from mouse and keyboard and the problem radomly happens as well.

No firmware in WD site. Some people complaining about other issues in their forum but problems are related to VIA and SIS chipsets.

Why the 4-pin/Sata power wouldn't work fine? Some friends of mine have Samsung and Seagate HDD's and that works perfectly for them. Previously, it was fed by the 4-pin directly connected to the drive and the issues, as I said initially, radomly took place as well.

As I told above, there's no firmware for it.

Voltages are pretty normal here. I mean... I've checked in Bios and through Smartgardian.

Bios information:

+12v = 12.09v

+3.3v = 3.33v

+5v = 4.99v

vcore = 1.4v

Vdimm: 2.65v

Smartiguardian:

+12v = 11.96v

+3.3v = 3.32v

+5v = 5.08v

vcore = 1.37v

vdimm = 2.64v

Considering the WD diagnostics tool, I have scanned the drive 2 or 3 times in DOS mode and no errors. Detail: full test scan.

If the above suggestions still leave you with the same issues, you should download WD disk tools and run a disk health check and determine whether or not you might have just got a faulty drive.

As mentioned above, at first glance the driver isn't faulty.

Thx a lot for your help.

Any other comment or piece of advice will really be very wellcome.

Im having this problem too. I just got my Ultra-D board, installed Windows XP fine on my SATA drive, then later after I restarted, it wouldn't boot into Windows and says DISK FAILURE. I checked the bios and the hard drive isn't detected. I tried another one (brand new one) and the same thing happens, it's not detected in the BIOS. I have tried multiple different SATA cables, and different SATA ports on the motherboard, but it would not detect the hard drives.

That way, what conclusion should we take from the experience? Mobo or HDD problem?

I'm really considering it'd be a problem with the bios. Although I have the latest bios installed, why does that HDD works fine when connected to other rigs and not properly specifically with ULTRA-D?

More help will be appreciated.

Thx.

It might be a BIOS issue of some kind. If the drive works OK on another mobo, then it seems it is a BIOS issue.

You did try all 4 SATA ports right?

Oh, and I said the power adapter wouldn't play a role. IE, they are fine.
