What to get in place of 2x7900GTX

I recently buyed 2x7900GTX (Club3D) but, like most people, I had nothing but problems with them.

 

I already RMAed 3 bad cards and now I'm getting sick of all this. Fortunately the store where I bought them is big and they have a good customer care policy. They were very kind and this time offered me to choose whatever I want as a replacement.

 

I would like to get an advice from you guys.

Main options for me are:

 

1) Try with another two GTXs from another brand (they have Asus and Verto).

 

2) Get 2x1900XT in crossfire and buy a new mobo separately (adding approx. 250 euros).

 

3) Get a single 1900XTX plus something extra of my choice (I have no probs adding some money too if it is worth).

This being the case what would you suggest ? (I was toying with the idea to replace my unlucky CPU).

(total value of returned card: 1100 euros.)

 

Initially I wanted to go with option 2 but then I realized that by the time crossfire will start to get decent support/benefit DX10 cards will be out and I will want one of them...

I think this might be a good track to go down. The 1900 series with a high CPU clock are a good combination, so maybe aim for a CPU that overclocks well and crank it as far as it goes.

 

I am looking at something like the x1900GT as mid range replacement of my 6600GT and I have to say that the ATIs are looking like the cards to get for trouble free computing until the next generation of cards come out. (even then, it will take some time for games to make use of the new technology and I think ATI are in a better position to 'last' before needing replacing)

Personally, I'd get an X1800XT and save the rest for a couple months down the road. I honestly think its still the best deal for the money since the 7900 series apparently has had problems (I'm one of the few that had none I guess).

 

Of course, if they don't allow saving money...

 

Grab the X1900XT (not the XTX, mostly a waste of money) and something else that you need, like maybe a dual core processor.

Firtst of all thank you for your replyes.

 

A 1900XT would probably be the best choice in my situation but switching from a dual 7900GTX SLI to a single 1900XT is hard. It's like downgrading instead of upgrading damn.

 

Anyway an additional thing to keep in mind is that my monitor only allows 1600x1200 max. so a crossfire solution would be a waste. I *only* want good min framerate with 4xAA

16xAF and HDR enabled at 1280x1024, maybe a 1900XT + a better CPU will be enough.

 

I think I will get a 1900XT and possibly an FX60 or 57 CPU which I hope to bring up at 3Ghz.

i gotta say get a single X1900XT and either watercool it or get a real good aftermarket cooler and go enjoy it

 

I've got the first card in my sig-rig @ 745/846 and it rocks....the second card is turned all the way down to 500/600 and is not being used in Crossfire mode (since my monitor only does 1280x1024 and Crossfire tech and support is still pretty sketchy).

 

But a single X1900XT = pure bliss

CPU prices in this shop are:

 

Opty 180 --> 800

FX 60 --> 860

Opty 175 --> 600

FX 57 --> 850

 

Is an opty still the best deal at that prices?

I'm not questioning your advice, just giving you more details.

Also consider taht i'm currently running my 4000+ at 2700 so it would be quite annoying to get a CPU that cant run faster.

Of course I know nothing about opty overclockability so Iill trust your advice anyway.

Virtually any 165/170/175/180 will do 2.6GHz, and most should do more. I haven't seen many people paying for the 175/180 because the 170/165 opterons are just that much cheaper and usually do as well. I've had 2 170s and a 165 now that have gone to 2.9 stable no problem, and could probably go higher if I had some tweaking time.

 

Of course nothing is guaranteed.

I have had my fx-60 for a couple of weeks now, and I love it. I have been playing with the O.C's briefly and was running it at 3.0 It was stable through all the 3DMarks, and SuperPI, never tested it through Prime though. I ended up clocking it back down for now because my Idle temps were around 40C (as opplosed to 34C) with 1.5V going to it. Not sure what it can tolerate for volts, considering I am running it stable at 2.8 with only 1.375 now. Man, was it fast though at 3G. I am going to play with it some more when I get some time.

Go for the 7950GX2 > less power required than X1900XT Crossfire and better performance -depending on what resolution you're playing at. If you're gaming 1920x1200 the GX2 can't be beat...good prices too. As for the cpu -a 165/170 will be fine
